Where can I get suitcase parts?

Asked by metadog (378points) May 25th, 2013

Hi! My wife has a 10 year old Diane Von Furstenburg suitcase where the telescoping handle has stopped working. Any idea who might sell replacement parts retail or online? Having trouble finding good resources. Would be a shame to trash it, was kinda pricey…

How much are similar suitcases on eBay? Maybe replacement is less expensive than repair?

I’ve had a L.L. Bean that stopped telescoping, sent it back got a new (paid the difference from when I bought and the day it was returned).
Check DVF website.

Unfortunately, this suitcase is old enough that I haven’t been able to find a replacement to match the set. And, it is way out of warranty with DVF. :(

Call DVF, number is at the bottom of the page, and they will help you I’m sure. Possibly you have to wait until Tuesday with the holiday. You don’t need a warranty for them to sell you a part, or fix the bag for a fee.

In a case such as this (no pun intended!) you have to put aside the emotional reaction you have to “sunk cost” in the case and look at what it is actually worth right now. That is, never mind what you paid for it back in the day or how nice it was when it worked. You have to look at what a similar piece of luggage is worth – in terms of utility first and appearance second – versus what other cases are worth. I expect that I’d be taking @jaytkay‘s advice in this, and looking for the replacement item. (Either that, or @Tropical_Willie‘s advice for your next purchase; it’s hard to beat those folks from Maine and the warranties they offer on their goods.)
