Here’s a pretty extensive list of potential health risks from the Mayo Clinic.

You can read about some of the potential side effects of too much fish oil on WebMD’s Site

Thank you. I always take 3 a day, ( I find it helps mentally). Though somehow, I managed to have 5 1000mg today, and my stomach is making some uncomfortable noises.

@Headhurts Is your fish oil intake being monitored by your doctor? This article on Livestrong suggests that most people should only be taking one 1000mg fish oil capsule per day, unless they have heart disease or high cholesterol, and if they take more than the single 1000mg capsule per day, it should be under the supervision of a doctor.

The WebMD site, that I listed above, suggested that too much fish oil can make symptoms of bipolar and depression worse. Is your doctor prescribing this for you, or are you self-medicating?

No, I take them myself. I read somewhere a while ago that they could help mental health. So I started taking them.

@Headhurts You should probably ask your doctor, but it does seem like you are taking too much.

You can take 4 grams of Omega 3 fish oil a day, and fear nothing but the benefit of decreased risk of heart disease.

Be aware that many supplements are contaminated with heavy metals. Be selective about the source.

There are many factors involved in ingesting fish oil. If for example, it’s free of heavy metals and toxins, it’s much safer than otherwise. From my quick look at the WebMd site, it assumes that fish oil that is high in all that.

I have a specific situation, and I am seeing an MD who is well educated on nutrition (unlike the majority of MD’s out there). For the time being I’m taking 11.2 g of very pure fish oil daily. This will not be long term.

You really should ask your doctor, particularly since too much can make mental issues worse.

How did you end up taking 5 today? Sometimes I have trouble tracking my medication, but if I’m not sure whether I’ve already taken something or not, I don’t take it. I’d rather miss a dose than possibly over-medicate myself and risk bad consequences.

@josie That is probably a dose for the average man, most recommendations for meds and related are based on an average body weight and if the OP weighs less than the “average” adult weight, and by adult I mean both genders comboned. A significant number of women weigh much less than that average and most of the petite women I know complain about having bad side effects or feeling overdrugged when they take medicine. I think doctors over drug them all the time. I have many friends who are about 5’2” sizes 4’s and 6’s. Possibly, your recommended dose should be adjusted down if someone weighs less than 120 pounds. They have lower calorie intake, less blood volume, etc. Just something to think about.

@Headhurts I wouldn’t worry if you took a couple too many today, just skip tomorrow. Amke sure you mention how much you take at your next doctor’s appointment along with any other meds you take. Doctors should ask not only about prescriptions, but also OTC supplements. I think it best not to take large doses of anything unless you have a specific medical reason.

What irritates me is when an MD who knows next to nothing about nutrition starts counseling patients on nutrition and supplements. I’ve seen and experienced this tactic over and over. I ignore the idiots.

@augustlan I carry some in my handbag and take 2 during the day at work and one after tea at home. For some reason, I had one before work, 3 during the day and one when I got home.

I always take 3 a day. I notice a big difference in myself if I miss a day, I feel agitated and anxious.

Kardamom's avatar

@Headhurts you still need to see a doctor, and let him know what meds you are taking, and make sure that you get some counseling for your other problems. Just coming on Fluther isn’t going to help.

Is there a reason why you are hesitating to see a doctor and/or a therapist?

Headhurts's avatar

@Kardamom I’m not hesitating. I take 150mg of Sertraline and I see my doctor every 6 week. I also have been seeing a therapist on and off since I were 17.

^^ OK, that’s good news, before it sounded like you were trying to handle things on your own.
