Why did you change from vegan to eating meat and dairy?

Asked by Aster (20023points) June 11th, 2013

I’ve been reading of people who were vegan for a couple years and changed back to eating meat. If you did that too, what made you change your mind? Don’t feel guilty. I eat meat everyday.

I decided to go vegan a few years ago, but I just couldn’t give up turkey and salmon.

I didn’t recognize any health benefits and I love the taste of meat. Any ethical reasons are mostly spurious.

^^^ The animals in question might strongly disagree with you.

I would never even attempt a vegan life style. I give mad props to the people who can do it, but really, there’s nothing better than a big fat bloody steak.
That’s just my humble opinion.

Not sure what I consider myself, but I go in and out of vegetarianism.

I’ll be vegetarian for a few years, stop for a few months, then go back into it for a few months. It’s all about balance and what feels right for your body.

Right now I am back on my vegetarian diet, but I am cutting down less on bread/wheat/starch/and processed foods.

I feel a lot healthier/better/and not heavy when I am not eating meat.

I’ve always drank almond milk too, so I’ve never drank cow milk (grossest thing ever).

@Katniss – You can’t find enough discipline to not eat something that will increase a heart attack, has more calories/fat/cholesterol, and ensures the suffering of an animal?

In exchange for, something meatless that tastes exactly like meat and is a lot healthier?

Yes that must be very, very difficult.

I have no problem with people who eat meat, it is the principle and the way animals are killed.

@Katniss Why would you want to eat something that is full of hormones? Would you ever eat your cat or dog? Have you ever set foot in a slaughterhouse ?

Equestrian18's avatar

@Katniss Studies show that people who eat beef/steak are more likely to have a heart attack and have heart disease. If you don’t care for the animal, then do it for your health and overall well being. It doesn’t take much effort.

Wow. Didn’t realize my love of steak would elicit such a strong response.
To answer your questions @Equestrian18 I eat steak maybe twice a year. It’s not a weekly occurrence. See? Self control.
I have not set foot in a slaughterhouse, nor will I ever do so.
I do not have a cat or a dog. I can assure you though, if I did, I would not eat them.
I’m assuming since you’re not a full time vegetarian you must eat meat from time to time also.

One of my cousins, who started out as a card carrying Cheetos eating junk food junkie, became a vegan, practically overnight, when he first went away to college and met a young lady. That relationship didn’t work out. Now he eats anything and everything, including insects, which he keeps sending us pictures of. He’s been to a lot of exotic countries, so he’s kind of like the Anthony Bourdain of our family.

@Kardamom And yet, you won’t drink your milk if an innocent little potato bug lands in it? ;0)

Kardamom's avatar

^^ Funny thing is, my cousin would absolutely love that! LOL.

If I found This Kind of a beetle in my milk, I probably wouldn’t spit it out. : P

Katniss's avatar

Right?? Would anybody? lol

Does your cousin eat tarantulas too? I was watching Bizarre Foods one time and Andrew Zimmern ate a roasted tarantula. I almost threw up!

Kardamom's avatar

@Katniss So far he’s never sent a picture of himself eating a tarantula, but he’s eaten lots of different worms and grubs and caterpillars and grasshoppers. It turns my stomach.

Katniss's avatar

Oh, I can imagine! But at least he doesn’t eat eyeballs or anything like that, right? Please say yes. lol

@Equestrian18 Something meatless that tastes exacty the same? False. I have yet to find something meatless that tastes, has the texture, or feels in my body the same as meat. Before you freak out, I 100% believe vegan is the healthiest diet, although a few cheats once in a blue moon I don’t think has significant negative impact. I have high cholesterol because of bad genes and the only way to keep my cholesterol down without meds is to not take cholesterol in through my mouth. However, I also know many people who eat all sorts of cholesterol and have low cholesterol counts. I am incredibly jealous of that.

Kardamom's avatar

@Katniss to the best of my knowledge he’s never eaten eyeballs, specifically, although he would easily eat any animal under the sun. Which also horrifies me (mostly due to the suffering and needless deaths of animals), because I am a vegetarian and would never eat any animal under the sun, including bugs. But I don’t preach to him. He has to make his own decision.

@JLeslie You are right that there are no products that taste/feel exactly like meat, but there are IMO some products that come pretty close, and in some cases are actually better.
