Almost fell asleep during Man of Steel, it felt like I was watching a two hour video game. Have you seen it yet?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) June 15th, 2013 from iPhone

Personally, I never thought a Superman movie could be so bland and lifeless. Even Superman Returns had more depth. Although I have to admit, I really liked the ending. But it shouldn’t take a movie two and a half hours for the audience to finally care about the characters. Your thoughts?

I am not a superhero fan. The last superhero movie I saw was Spiderman, and to me, it was sooo boring. I think I did make myself fall asleep to escape the boredom.

Not seen it yet, looking forward to making my own mind up.

I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t comment on whether I like it or not. But you know, considering how relentlessly the hype for these summer blockbuster movies flows – sometimes for years before the movie is even made – the expectations created are impossible to fulfill for today’s “seen it all” ticket buyers, especially younger ones. (As evidence of how well the hype works, you saw Superman the first day it opened!)

Sorry you were bored, I’ll definitely see it because I’m a lifelong fan (I still miss TV’s George Reeves and the first blockbuster Superman, Chris Reeve). I may be disappointed by some of it but as in every Supe movie or TV show I ever saw, I’ll still enjoy watching the King of Superheroes fight for truth, justice, the American way and over-priced popcorn.

@Pachyderm In The Room Your answer is really condescending. I don’t consider myself a “seen it all” ticket buyer whatsoever. And I saw it on the first day not because of the hype, but because it looked like a good movie judging from the trailers and interviews from the filmmakers.

What is the opposite of Christopher Walken?

@rockfan, you say you saw it because “it looked like a good movie judging from the trailers and interviews from filmmakers.” Doesn’t that rather prove my point about hype? Nonetheless, I was expressing my opinion, not knocking yours. Sorry to have offended you.

@rockfan “Even Superman Returns had more depth.”

Now that’s a strong statement. “Superman Returns” was so dull, I couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes.

The “Man of Steel” reviews have been mixed, at best, yet my very intelligent brother enjoyed the movie. I don’t know… I like to watch films myself and form my own opinions, but that gets expensive at $12 – $15 per show. The cost becomes a real incentive to avoid bad movies.

I thought this was the best of the Superman movies so far.
I am sorry you fell asleep, but you should give it another chance.

Okay so, sorry for those who are excited to see this new Sups movie. Please stop reading now.

Ok, well…THANK YOU @rockfan-! I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I knew it was a mistake when they hired Nolan to get involved. Goyer would have probably done better without Nolan’s guidance and definitely Snyder’s direction.

I felt hey, it’s fine to update these fictional superheroes but why too much angst and zero joy. Where is the fun in that-?

If I want ultra-reality I’d go for a documentary. Nolan did great with his first and second Batman. I enjoyed those. But the third was just an exercise in showing what happens when you ran out of creative juice and you have an obligation to do a third installment. It was tired. So tired. Terrorist attacks…again-?

And then he got Superman. Another fictional character he can turn into a dark and serious character more suitable in today’s world. Really-? But why-? Why dark again-? Are there no more happy people out there-?

Sups is NOT Batman. Yet that didn’t stop them from giving him a pessimistic view in life and wow, yes, even a psychological trauma involving Jonathan Kent’s death.

Everyone knows Mr. Kent will die but my goodness, nothing like this. Nolan and the guys just have to twist it to make it new and dramatic but it only ended up…cruel and unnecessary. Almost stupid come to think of it.

This does not mean the movie would not be a hit. I wish it would be. To pave the way for a Justice League movie down the line. But as a fan of Superman, I’m disappointed. The digital fx were also badly done, especially in the beginning. The action scenes, I got what I wanted there. Lots. But that’s just the cone. No ice-cream.

I wish they didn’t touch Superman’s history at all. Everybody knows that already. But they just have to give it their interpretation in order to reinvent him. Not only his clothes but his emotions and psychological make-up. Fine. Was it satisfying or entertaining at the least-? Super NO.

I might just have to watch that movie now. Your tears are delicious

The Superman back story changes worked for me, and I, for one, didn’t mind NOT seeing the baby lifting the car.

I thought it was great. You have to already have an interest in Superman, though. I love the story of Superman and I liked how they showed this in the movie. It had an aspect the other movies did not.

And I also don’t understand why people complain about long movies, because you would most likely complain if it was too short, therefore not giving enough time to let the characters develop. I’m an advocate of long movies because you need that time to add more stuff into the story, which develops the characters.

This is why all of the horrible, quick-paced comedies and lame action movies are an hour and 30 minutes and movies that usually deemed great are over 2 hours, in my opinion.

We saw it yesterday. Like rockfan, I began to get a little drowsy about halfway through. OK, we get it. Moviemakers can create some great-looking battles using CGI. But these action films are beginning to look interchangeable.

Can’t they occasionally throw a little wit in there ? I kept drifting back to Christopher Reeve returning to that diner where the punks had earlier roughed him up after he’d lost his superpowers. Now, his powers had returned:

“Funny…..I never saw garbage eat garbage before….”

Revisiting this thread to announce, as if anyone cared, that I finally saw this and mostly liked it. Yes, there were some slow, overly long and not totally comprehensible bits and maybe a bit too much videogame-styled CGI violence. But I liked that the plot centered on Krypton, Jor-L and Zod’s war against earth (which was only silly and comic booky in the Christopher Reeves version—and I especially liked what I think is the only time a Superman movie has revealed the emotional side of his character and relationship with his earth parents (Lane and Cosner were well cast, as was Crowe). I think Cavill really LOOKS like the Superman I’ve always envisioned and Amy Adams makes a terrific Lois Lane. Thought I wasn’t going to like his completely reworked costume, but I did.

The ending nicely sets up the next one. I give it a B+.
