Are there any foods you used to hate, but now have an appreciation for?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) June 19th, 2013 from iPhone

I used to gag at the very sight of cottage cheese, but ever since I tried it again last year, I practically eat it everyday. What about you?

Fresh pineapple! Couldn’t stand it as a kid, can’t get enough of it now.

But the canned kind… yuck!

I use to repulsed by the smell of durian fruit, But now like all aspects of it.

Brussell Sprouts, Asparagus, Onions, Jalapeno’s, Cauliflower, Spinach.

Hey, these are all vegetables!

I used to hate the flavor of chocolate whey protein. I always wondered if there was any unflavored kind. I would put a ton of fruit and other things to mask the flavor but now I just have it with milk…It tastes like chocolate milk. Milk used to be repulsive to me, too, but now I love it.
I’m still trying to get myself to like eggs. I still cringe at even seeing them cooked. The only way they seem appealing is if I had them raw, which I’ve done a few times.

DigitalBlue's avatar

I never liked cucumbers, but now I probably eat one cuke a week. Always hated chocolate, too, but now I enjoy it and occasionally crave it. Especially dark chocolate. Yum.

I did not like avocado when I was growing up. I have loved it since I was about twenty. And now a days I eat about half of one each day.

I still mourn all the years I didn’t eat fried calamari. They just looked too peculiar to try.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Brussel sprouts and water. I read that our taste buds change like every seven years, so maybe that explains it. I will never ever ever love liver though. :)

Mama_Cakes's avatar

Brussel Sprouts.

And same with Knowitall, I can’t do liver. My Dad used to flour a piece and pan fry it. The smell made me want to hurl.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Mama_Cakes My mom tried to hide it under gravy to fool me, ughhhh, rude – lol

ucme's avatar

Irish teabags, loathed them as a kid, love the little parcels of pasta now.

Headhurts's avatar

Almost everything. I was a VERY fussy eater until I reached 26. Now I love food and I regret being such a picky stupid girl.

tups's avatar

Cottage cheese for me too. Black olives (but not alone).

downtide's avatar

Fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, dark chocolate, coffee.

picante's avatar

Champagne! I was a very picky eater as a child, so I’ve discovered many wonderful tastes as I’ve matured. We didn’t have many fresh fruits and vegetables in my childhood household (just the canned stuff), so almost anything in that camp is wonderful.

zenvelo's avatar

There is a reason liver is considered offal. Because it is awful.

Katniss's avatar

Fish. I used to hate it. I got a weird craving for it one day and I’ve been eating it ever since.

YARNLADY's avatar

I hated cheese when I was little, but some people introduced me to pizza when I was 16 and I’ve loved it ever since.

DominicX's avatar

I never cared much for tomatoes outside of spaghetti sauce or ketchup when I was little; now I love it in larger pieces in salads and other dishes.

Most other foods I disliked as a kid I still dislike, though :P No love for eggs or bacon or most breakfast food, and mushrooms…still low on the list.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Almost all vegetables. My mother’s cooking philosophy was that it’s not ready til it’s just past well done. I’ve learned how to do them well and they are so good. Also sweet corn. We froze so much of that when I was young that I grew to loath sweet corn. Now I’m back into it. (I also love chicken livers)

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

I am the opposite. I like everything, but as I have gotten older, I don’t like watermellon or chewing gum. It is the texture. Yuck!

Supacase's avatar

Cantaloupe, broccoli, garbanzo beans, spinach. Eggrolls – it was the cabbage. Sweet potatoes have found a place in my life as fries or chips. Still working up the nerve to give Brussels sprouts another chance.

Unbroken's avatar

Lima beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, zucchini, olives a little, garbanzo beans, egg plant, mustard, spicy foods, kale, lentils, etc.

So many more. I was an extremely picky earter as a child.

augustlan's avatar

So many. When I was a kid, I basically lived on hot dogs (with nothing on them – I didn’t even like ketchup!) and applesauce…I was such a picky eater. Now there are so many foods I love that I wouldn’t have touched in the past. Kinda’ wish I was a little pickier these days. ;)

Backstreets's avatar

Tomatoes. Now I here that they are good for the prostate, so I might have to bite the bullet and start eating them

woodcutter's avatar

Onions and broccoli. It was so gross to end up with any of that on my plate.

Short story about the broccoli. Back when my father was with us,I was 4 maybe, I forget now, but he tried to force me to eat some one night at dinner. Mom argued against it because she knew I hated it. Feeling intimidated and didn’t want to have a fight at the table I managed to get a small piece down and they both watched me puke into my plate and the vomit stopped just short of the very edge of the plate…perfect. My eyes were watering as I watched my mother remove my plate from the table with out spilling any of the contents. Nice save Mom.

JLeslie's avatar

Salad dressing.

Asparagus, but I only like it roasted or grilled.

laurenkem's avatar

When I was little, I wouldn’t eat onions or tomatoes on anything! I wouldn’t even eat pizza! I now love both onions and tomatoes. Still not over the brussel sprout thing, though

I am, apparently, a very picky eater. I won’t eat most condiments (exception: ketchup, but only on fries), no mustard, no relish and absolutely never, ever ever mayonnaise. I also won’t eat anything like pasta salad, chicken salad, tuna salad (or tuna in any form) or egg salad. Nothing mayonnaise based! Ick!

No organ meat of any kind, and I eat turkey the way most people eat chicken (pretty much every other day or so), ‘cause I just think it has a better flavor. I cook a turkey breast every weekend.

mangeons's avatar

Avocados, dark chocolate, bananas and my number one weird one: raisins. I used to hate raisins but now I love them!

I’m sure there are more, since I used to be an insanely picky eater, and now my eating tastes are much more broad. I even ate a whole, pickled baby octopus from a Chinese buffet once! And it was good!

AshLeigh's avatar

Moonshine.

Plucky's avatar

It’s strange but I can’t think of anything I didn’t like as a kid that I do like now. I’m very resistant to change. I like what I liked then (except meat of course). Any food I didn’t like, that I can remember, I still don’t like as an adult. Hmm, there has to be something!? I shall ponder this.

PeppermintBiscuit's avatar

Canned oysters. My dad used to bring them on our family camping trips. He gave me one to try and I spat it out into the firepit.
A few months ago I saw them in the grocery store and bought some, on a whim. I loved them! Now it’s almost an addiction.

Kardamom's avatar

I’ll try to make this my short list (knowing that no one will believe me)

Mayonnaise

Broccoli

Yogurt

Eggs

Cilantro

Peas

Coconut

Olives

Whole wheat bread

Hot Sauce

Tomatoes

Avocados

Mushrooms

Cabbage

Rye bread

Brussels sprouts

Beets

Turnips

Radishes

Horseradish

Marinara sauce

Squash (of any kind)

Brazil nuts

Onions

Pickled jalapeƱos

Collard greens

Spicy food

Soup of any kind

Foreign food

When I was a kid I would eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on white bread, macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, plain cheese pizza, and spaghetti with only butter and Parmesan cheese and that was about it.

Now, I can’t imagine not eating any of the above, they’re staples in my diet. And that is only the list of things that I previously thought were yucky. There’s about 100 times that amount of items that I always liked, or had never even tasted (so I didn’t know any better) that I consider a regular and delicious part of my diet.

Favorite cuisines are Mexican, Indian and Thai and I love, love, love soup!

@Supacase A recipe similar to This One was served at an office Christmas party many years ago. It was this that preparation that changed my mind about Brussels sprouts forever. This is not the healthiest of recipes, but it gave me an introduction to them (I actually crave Brussels sprouts) and from that jumping off place, I was able to try This and now This

Im surprised ive gone this far and long without friut or vegatables. Im 39 and cant drink milk , never eggs, never had anything out of the sea…ive eaten 2 orange and apple in my life time. I realize its a texture thing. I dont want all that in my mouth. I crave sweets in mornings and bedtime. I always wondered bout gettin hypnosis maybe change my eating habits completely.

Katniss's avatar

@ilp4eae Welcome to Fluther.
Milk is disgusting. I’m totally with you on that one.
You’re missing out on a lot of great food though.
Do you take vitamins? I ask because if you never eat fruits or vegetables your body is probably lacking some serious nutrients.

ilp4eae's avatar

No vitamins. I do feel like im 65, no stength, 30 pounds over weight , and i never been tested for diabetis cuz of fear i have that too. I want hypnosis just change my eating ways.

Katniss's avatar

While you’re waiting for your hypnosis appointment you should pop a multivitamin. It can’t hurt. :0)
Maybe you could even make a game out of it and commit to trying something new everyday.
I do understand about some of it being a texture thing, I’m weird about texture too.

ilp4eae's avatar

If i feel a piece of lettuce or any crunchy in my food , or taste or smell mustard or ketchup its all bad. Cant eat anymore…lol
