How does making money on youtube work?

Asked by Mr_Saturn512 (558points) June 25th, 2013

I’m kind of confused how to make money off my videos on youtube. I choose the monetize option on every video I upload but I get the feeling that’s not enough, right? I have to make a GoogleAdSense account or something, right? Well, I have further questions about that.

I looked at the application for the GoogleAdSense and I’m wondering how exactly they give you the money. There doesn’t seem to be a spot for bank account info or anything, so do they just mail you a check after you put in your address? Is it that easy? I hope it is. Because I’d rather not have my parents realize my channel because I say some goofy things they’d might have a row about. So I was thinking of putting my neighbor’s address and he’ll just have all the checks for me (we do things like that for each other)

One way to make money on Youtube is if you’re a celebrity. Google will pay celebs a hefty chunk for endorsements. Check to see if you are in fact a celebrity. No? Okay let’s move on.

First of all, let’s be clear about the fact that Google owns YouTube. It’s just another giant ad space for them to monetize. You mentioned AdSense, which you could put on your channel and make a little bit of extra scratch. Here’s the “cliff notes” on how that works:

You sign up for adsense, and place it on your Channel. Google shows the ad to people who come to your channel. If they click the ad, you get paid. That’s the simple version of course. It takes a LOT of clicks to get any decent money.

As for how you get paid, the best way is a paypal account. If you’re even thinking about monetizing anything on the internet and don’t have a paypal account, go learn about Paypal and set up an account. Do that first. It’s free, it’s easy and most importantly – it is secure.

Monetizing anything on the internet, no matter where on the internet will always require the same thing: Lots of eyeballs. (meaning Traffic / Views)

The more people are attracted to something you created, the more your ad space is worth. Pretty simple concept, but tough to achieve.

But trust me, by the time you start bringing in the huge droves of traffic, you’ll have better means of capitalizing on them than adsense. Enjoy!

My daughter and her friend made a video of her doing a suspension from a tree. This is the link , but I will mention that it is age restricted.
My daughter’s friend posted the video on YouTube, with my daughter’s permission. It now has 120,000 views.
When it approached 100,000 views, YouTube contacted my daughter’s friend, and asked to buy the video, so that they could put short advertisements on before the video. He spoke with my daughter, and they agreed not to sell it, to allow people to watch the video without commercials.
So, my advice to you? Make a popular video, then sell YouTube the rights. I think they wanted to give $3000 to my daughters friend, but I could be wrong.
