What is the weirdest name you have given to a folder and why?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23628points) June 26th, 2013

When I was about 12 and didn’t know much about computers, I downloaded a game which I didn’t want anyone to play lest they’d destroy my progress (I was really selfish back then :p) So I put it in a folder but at first I didn’t know how to hide it from everyone. Eventually I discovered the “hide” feature of folders, so I set my folder to “hidden” mode. I was so confident that no one would discover my game that I named my folder NOBODY CAN FIND THIS 0.o

And just yesterday, I downloaded some “inappropriate” comics (Torpedo, Sin City…) I mean their contents are OK but there are some really hot scenes there and if my mom discovers me with one of those scenes the comics will immediately become “porn book” and go to the recycle bin forever. This time I locked them in a folder with the help of a program. The folder’s name is now NSFW :D

How about you? What is the weirdest name you’ve ever given to a folder and why do you do that?

P.S: I put the NSFW folder into the NOBODY CAN FIND THIS one :p

Many years ago, a coworker and I installed “Doom” on a company computer, so we could play while at work (we could get in a lot of trouble for this). We were able to hide the file, and just to be sure we named it “reformat drive”. We were actually intimidated by this, and we named it! No one ever found it, to my knowledge.

You’re going about it the wrong way. I believe in the concept of “Hiding In Plain Sight” – meaning that you would give your folder a plausible name that people would look at and say “boring”.

Such as c:\Windows Additional Productivity Software
or
c:\backup Files
or something like that.

Your mother is not a complete idiot. If she is even partially self-aware, she will know what NSFW means.

One other point: there are any number of freeware encryption programs (TrueCrypt or AXcrypt for example) that will encrypt files and folders both. If you’re going to download stuff, you might want to also install one of the encryption programs. Just don’t forget the password….

/nobears

Background: I belong to a club that has grizzly in its title, and when the web first started and we developed an email list serve, there was a lot of calling it “bears” this or that. So when I got my first AOL screenname, I used part of my last name and ‘bear” as my screen name.

And then I started getting strange messages and requests on AOL, not knowing that a bear is a burly hirsute gay man.

In those days my wife had access to my computer files (who knew about privacy from a spouse in 1995?), and she would get all freaked out when she would inadvertently run across something that might cause an IM from a bear. So I created a folder “nobears” to give her a little peace of mind.

Haha. I thought of manila folders—actual paper folders—when I read this. And I probably haven’t given weird names to many of those. But I did have one that I used to take to staff meetings. I wrote on it in highly visible letters: “Now what?”

I have a folder of pictures that I named ‘One folder to hold them all, and in this folder hide them’... another called ‘phtoos’ because I was typing-dyslexic at the time and never bothered fixing it. I have one, not really weird, but it’s a folder of instructions for all the animal care that is ‘the big list of stuff’.

Folder Bolt, to trick students into thinking I was a super smart computer Apple hacker, by opening the folder.
