Would you call the cops on someone you heard ate dogs?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) June 26th, 2013

If you knew of a family from Southeast Asia that seem to run through pets but you didn’t know them well enough to ask why. A family member of yours did know them better, and was at a BBQ they had where they served him a very tasty steak. Your relative asked what type of meat it was and was told he didn’t want to know. After much persistence they confided that it was dog. They would get free young dogs, (CL, and the classifieds I suspect) and fatten the animal up for many months then butcher it and eat it, which was common in their homeland. Just off that would you report them to the cops? Since you have no puppy carcass, would you remain silent not to stir trouble you can’t really proved happened?

If they told someone, that person should call it in, no one else. I probably would call.

I would knock on their door and introduce myself. Naturally, I would inquire about them and their culture. (All of which I’d probably do anyway.)

I would mention how a friend of mine had visited such-and-such country and had really loved A, B and C. But was appalled that they ate dogs.

Depending on their reaction, I would either sigh with relief or explain to them how that was not okay in our country—culturally or legally.

I think they would understand.

If they continued to do so, I’d call the police. Actually, I’d probably go over there if I saw they were still getting new dogs. I’d also probably post a warning on Craigslist if it was something they openly admitted to doing.

No.

If they choose to eat dogs that is their choice. As an avid dog lover myself I could never do such a thing to a dog, but, as a meat eater I can’t tell somebody that one mammal deserves immunity over another.

somebody would have to call the police if they decided to eat my dogs. i would fucking kill them

tups's avatar

No, I would not call any cops. It’s a cultural difference and I would respect that as long as they were treating the dogs well.

Imagine what Muslims and Jews think about people eating pig. Imagine what Hindus think about people eating cow. It’s not different.

In the U.S. it’s not legal to kill and eat dogs, so I’d probably first contact the Humane Society.

Vegan here.

To me eating a dog is the same as eating a cow, or a pig. I never understood the double standard. I mean people have those animals they eat on their plate as pets. Ironically, on Masterchef tonight they have pigs head and a vegetarian I love her take on it, covering the pigs head with a towel because “you don’t want to look someone in the eyes while you are getting ready to cook them.”

I mean look at these cute cows.
And these cute pigs.

But people eat this meat all the time. And then I try to understand the logic of it, like if some disaster happened and killed off many farm animals but dogs happened to survive what would we do if the government started busting down doors saying they needed our dogs for meat. I don’t think that’s going to happen but I’ve envisioned both of my dogs hanging like pigs slit from neck to groin with guts hanging out.

This very question makes me look at things this way.

This question is another reason why I am vegan among other reasons.

But I would definitely call the proper authorities on these people, they need to understand they are not in their own country anymore and there is rules and the least that could be done is save some poor lost dog from going through murder, and if they are not guilty then people can feel at ease.

@tups :/ what about if they are actually eating the dogs, wouldn’t that mean they are not treating the dogs well? How do you know? In specific countries eating dog is not allowed so it wouldn’t matter how well you treat them the end result is all that matters.

I will mention that the “boat people” refugees of the 1980’s set up camp in Golden Gate park in San Francisco, and the number of stray dogs in the park dropped to zero.

I have a friend who is Filipino, and every time one of her neighbors can’t find their dog, they send over one of the kids to find out what she is having for dinner.

YARNLADY's avatar

It is apparently more common than we realize. I remember years ago, people used to accuse the street bums that gathered under the bridge of eating neighborhood cats.

WestRiverrat's avatar

What for? If it isn’t someone else’s dog where is the crime?

Eating dog is not a crime so far as I know. It may be a crime to sell the meat, and it is definitely a crime to sell it without letting the buyer know what it is. But butchering and eating your own dog is perfectly legal.

In Guongxiou China, I visited an outdoor market that sold everything from dried herbs and roots to vegetables to freshly butchered chickens to bowls of scorpions for snacking. The caged puppys for sale, like lobsters in a tank, were not the most shocking thing I saw.

As @Blondesjon said, who am I to tell them what mammals they can eat?

Just don’t eat my puppy.

People like that tend to know how to use machetes. I wouldn’t want them wondering if it was me who dropped the dime.

In some states it is illegal. California is one.

598a. (a) Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who kills any dog or cat with the sole intent of selling or giving away the pelt ofsuch animal.
(b) Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who possesses, imports into this state, sells, buys, gives away or accepts any pelt of a dog or cat with the sole intent of selling or giving away the pelt of the dog or cat, or who possesses, imports into this state, sells, buys, gives away, or accepts any dog or cat, with the sole intent of killing or having killed such dog or cat for the purpose of selling or giving away the pelt of such animal.

“598b. (a) Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who possesses, imports into, or exports from, this state, sells, buys, gives away, or accepts any carcass or part of any carcass of any animal traditionally or commonly kept as a pet or companion with the intent of using or having another person use any part of that carcass for food.
(b) Every person is guilty of a misdemeanor who possesses, imports into, or exports from, this state, sells, buys, gives away, or accepts any animal traditionally or commonly kept as a pet or companion with the intent of killing or having another person kill that animal for the purpose of using or having another person use any

(c) This section shall not be construed to interfere with the
production, marketing, or disposal of any livestock, poultry, fish, shellfish, or any other agricultural commodity produced in this state. Nor shall this section be construed to interfere with the lawful killing of wildlife, or the lawful killing of any other animal under the laws of this state pertaining to game animals.”

I believe it’s illegal in the UK* so if I heard such a confession with my own ears, then yes I would report it. If I heard it only second or third hand, I wouldn’t bother.

* I was wrong. I just googled it and it’s apparently legal to eat dog meat here, provided that the conditions in which the dogs are kept and slaughtered is legal and humane.

I would never eat a dog because I love dogs and I was not raised in a culture where we eat dogs (or cats) — so the idea of it is repellent to me. To most of us in the western world. Perhaps it’s because they’re cute or they’re considered companions, or even part of the family.

I also have a pet rabbit whom I love equally — and he’s ridiculously cute and friendly. But I’ve also eaten rabbit. Saw them hanging in the butcher shop window when I was a kid. It’s not uncommon for westerners to eat rabbit. Or duck (I love duck). I also like to feed ducks at the pond with my daughter.

So where exactly does the “eat or not eat” line get drawn? And based on what criteria?

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@cookieman that is one of the reasons why I am vegan. It’s just one. The line is drawn by a personal choice and probably psychological and societal influence. Just like someone can draw the line between butchering a friend and having them as a pet.

I also think it takes a certain person to turn off certain emotions so that they aren’t affected by that idea of what on their plate at the end of the night. The average person just ignores it. And then there are other people like Robert Pickton or Jeffrey Dahmer who cannot draw a line.

I personally knew it from the time I was a child about 5 and cried at my dad not to eat the snakes (eel). My father didn’t eat dogs and cats, wouldn’t of been on purpose :/ but he loved raw hamburger, blood sausage, liver all things I think are gross.

My family did not like the fact that I would only eat chicken, somehow I felt better that it was just “a chicken”. Until I got to an age that I could research it all myself and my eyes were completely opened, now I won’t even use regular sugar or eat marshmallows :/

I would rather eat dandelions than eat a cat or a dog the fields around here are covered with them :D

Of course in the winter time that doesn’t give me much choice :/ guess I’ll starve and die and the homeless can eat me instead of the cats and dogs and I’d save a couple of animals at least.

WestRiverrat's avatar

I have eaten dandelions, actually had some last night. I have eaten dog before, and would not skip the meal if it was on the menu again.

One of the reasons many native american tribes had lots of dogs was so they would have a source of protein when there was a bstorm and they couldn’t hunt or gather. Some of my friends on the reservaton still eat dog on a regular basis.

Does that go for rabbit, ferrets, ducks, parrots, snakes, turtles, and doves? Many of those or commonly used as pets though in way smaller numbers than dogs, cats, and horses.

nofurbelowsbatgirl's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central You know that’s a really good question, and I don’t really know. :/ I wish I had the answer, but I don’t. All states have different laws. I think game wardens in California are pretty strict when it comes to animals and the law.

YARNLADY's avatar

Just this week, a local family was raided because they raised rabbits to eat. The neighbors turned them in for mistreating the live rabbits, not for eating them.

Shinimegami's avatar

Many Chinese like eat dogs, no reason call cops. Humans much more important of dogs. Is bad laws if true when say California have absurd laws someone list. Should get petition change them.

tups's avatar

@nofurbelowsbatgirl It’s not illegal to eat dog where I am.
If you say that eating a dog is not treating it well, then that’s not any different than eating cow, chicken or whatever even though they’ve had a good life. If you think eating animal in general i morally wrong then it’s another discussion.
