Would you consider Roseanne the most realistic sitcom ever?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) June 27th, 2013

Say what you will about Roseanne Barr but Roseanne the show, was pretty realistic. It was nothing like the over the top humor of Married with Children. It had a human feel to it. Dan and Roseanne were a really believable couple and the writing was very good. It was like watching an actual family.

I’ve been thinking about this question for about 5 minutes now.
I’m inclined to agree with you.
Most sitcom families are really over the top or too goody-goody.
Rosanne was hilarious and I think the average person could relate to them more so than say, the Cleavers, the Huxtables, or, as you mentioned, the Bundys.
I’m not going to lie though, I have been called Kelly Bundy more times than I care to count. lol

Sure, it was realistic. But it was still a sitcom.

In real life, Roseanne would have been fired from half those jobs she had.

I’d say Two and a Half Men is more realistic. /sarcasm

I loved watching Roseanne, it always felt like i was watching reality TV with a real family.. They were so crazy and believable . Its a shame they went off the air. :( Thank God i have their DVD collection..

Perhaps. But the last season was probably the least realistic of any sitcom ever.

@glacial I totally agree with you. After they won Lotto it changed the whole show. I still today don’t understand how the show ended.. Makes no sense to me

@Emt3225 I recall that they were trying to make a point, by taking the show into some kind of bizarre fantasy. I don’t actually recall what the point was. :/

In the early years, yes, realistic in many ways. It certainly touched on family relationships and issues that many of us could relate to. What I appreciated most was the love that was conveyed through humor—albeit often in the form of sarcasm.

However… when Roseanne took over producer responsibilities later in the run, I lost interest. While the writing was still very good, the situations got sillier and sillier.

Oh, but I did love their Halloween episodes.

@Emt3225 and @glacial On the last show of the penultimate season, Dan had a heart attack.
The last season, which began with the Connors winning the lottery, was meant to be the story that Rosanne was writing about her family, to escape the fact that Dan had died.

The show was very well written, and it’s writers and many of the cast are now doing Big Bang Theory, which is also very good.

My favorite Rosanne episodes were the Halloween ones. They always killed me.

Dan dying still breaks my heart. Seeing John Goodman in films always makes me warm and fuzzy inside. He’ll always be Dan to me. And Johnny Galecki will always be David. Leonard who?

Roseanne and All in the Family both make me nostalgic about my childhood. Although I’m only 23, I watched reruns of these shows religiously as a kid.

I do agree that it was one of the most realistic sitcoms. My favorite sitcom ever was Friends, but even I know how unrealistic that show was. Six gorgeous friends that basically lived in a coffee shop and worked about one day a week, yet could always afford their bills. Still, though, I never get sick of that show.

filmfann's avatar

@livelaughlove21 I was going to say that about Friends, but I would have said something closer to “5 gorgeous friends and Ross”.

@filmfann Aww. Ross actually became one of my favorites in the later seasons, when he stopped being such a bummer. I think he’s as attractive Matthew Perry at least, though I do love me some Chandler as well.

@filmfann Right! Thanks for saving me from looking it up. I seem to recall that there was a little more to it than the plot twist, though… some point she wanted to make about the classes. Maybe I will just do some digging.

It was until Modern Family came along.

@filmfann The ending still confuses me.. lol So they never won the money ?

filmfann's avatar

@Emt3225 No. It was Rosanne’s escape mechanism. They never won money, and Dan is gone.

@filmfann Thank you. I will pop in the DVDs tomorrow and watch the last season again
