Why do American journalists take themselves so seriously?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) June 29th, 2013

I spent a nice afternoon watching the Australian version of the Today show. It is funny, the men start sex jokes, and the women raise the stakes until the men get embarrassed and wander off set. Then they joke about how the guys start stuff but can’t finish it.

I am aware that in England newspapers shows boobs in their newspapers like it is the most natural thing in the world. Why do news anchors take themselves less seriously in other parts of the world, while American Reporters consider themselves sober professionals?

When one is trying to shape policy one way or another, its just best to be taken seriously. Best way to do that is to seem serious.

Apparently you haven’t heard of Anderson Cooper…

And on Fox News, most of them act like complete clowns.

I’ve got to say I never watch the Today show or Sunrise. The content is banal and I think based on some of your morning shows there. They’re entertainment rather than focused on news. Certainly news is included but much of the content is fluff. I prefer to watch ABC Breakfast and that’s a much more serious news program.

Boobs in the newspaper. I don’t think most serious British newspapers have breasts on page three. Tabloids, yes they certainly used to. Haven’t seen one for years. The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph etc. tend to deliver their news without breasts.

I think journalists attempting balanced journalism should be serious. Meaning the news should have a serious tone. Morning shows which aren’t exactly all news can have a light and fun feel.

I do think in the US journalists seem to think they are experts now. They are part of discussions on topics, especially politics. Like they have an expert opinion. Balanced journalism the person conducting the interview isn’t supposed to have an opinion. This is why most shows on Fox don’t count as real news shows, their opinions are obvious. At least on MSNBC, which has become more and more extreme on the liberal side, they don’t try to say they are news shows.

It is just the issue of different cultures. You take it too serious…

There aren’t any journalists in mainstream U.S. “news” anymore.
The term “presenters” is about right, and taking any of them seriously is a mistake.
