Does it make a difference that I financially support Amnesty International?

Asked by tups (6732points) July 3rd, 2013

This girl from Amnesty International just called me and we talked about abortion being illegal in Bolivia. I already gave an amount of money per month to Amnesty, but she asked me if I would give more and I said yes. But then it leaves me wondering if my money really makes a difference?

They have what I would call a moderate rating (taking into account what percentage of every dollar goes to programs rather than salaries and campaigns, for example).

Syz beat me to it. Two star rating out of a possible five.

It is common practice for nonprofits to call their donor base. They know you are donors and they hope to guilt you into giving more.

@WestRiverrat Yeah, I know. But she had a really cute voice and if you say no to a course like that, you feel awful. Besides, I can spare a few crowns to make the world a better place. I just don’t want to pay for someone’s high salary.

Another way to look at the topic is: does it make a difference to me or to those I care about? Sometimes my giving is enough for it to be worthwhile for me.

And as long as you are happy with the way it is spent, then you have your answer!

Me, I have dropped many non-profits that I have supported once or twice because they spend a tremendous amount trying to get more from me. The Sierra Club is one, and the ACLU is another, that both spend a ton on me, despite not having given them anything in years!

Give just as much as you feel comfortable giving, and stop there.
It’s very important to learn how/when to say no to most charities. They will badger you with emergencies and crises endlessly especially if they have a record that you respond to that.
