Has anyone tried natural cures for oral thrush?

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) July 10th, 2013

I have done some research and garlic, apple cider vinegar and coconut oil have been mentioned to name a few, as natural antifungals.

Has anyone had first hand experience with a natural product that has cured oral thrush? Or any other thrush.

Thanks

< Is a dentist and has seen lots of oral thrush: Apples. Cranberry. However, I recommend doing a fluconazole treatment and getting it overwith. Just saying.

You can get gentian violet over the counter at Walmart. It works great but your mouth will be purple for a day or two. It only takes one treatment.

@Judi Thanks. Is it not toxic? Would one use it neat or diluted?

They gave it to my daughter when she was a baby. Just painted the inside of her mouth with it. Not diluted. It did stain her mouth for a day. It was really funny because it was in 1980. She had a red Mohawk anyway because she was a baby and the sides of her head didn’t have much hair and then she had purple lips. She was the first punk rock baby. :-)

I don’t know but what is it caused by? What would prevent it?

For just oral thrush you can try 5 to 15 drops of tea tree oil in water mouth rinse.

Change your toothbrush and avoid sugar and foods with mold such as aged cheese nuts and nut butters.

If you have systemic thrush probiotics that contain acidophilus and bifidus taken after meals can help. If you buy the pill form it should be refigerated if you buy yogurt remember most contain 25 to 35 percent of your daily value of sugar and consider getting a less sugary and tasty one.

Dandelion tea also helps and grape seed extract 200 mg two to three times a day.

But most helpful and powerful is oregano oil. Take 300 to 500 mg capsules or liquid form will meals to avoid digestive upset.

@Unbroken Thanks. I realize treating it topically is not the best. I saw an interesting video on how the tongue is a mirror of the bowl. So I guess it could be systemic. I will probably start taking Nystatin (Mycostatin) tomorrow. I have so been trying to avoid more drugs! I have made diet changes as I do believe correct food is more preventative than curative? Not sure, I stand to be corrected on that one.

@LornaLove Probably safer quicker in the long run to take a perscription antifungal. Some food is preventative other foods can be curative. But all in all antifungals aren’t that bad of perscription.

Regarding oregano oil, some extractions are not suitable to take orally, only topically. Oreganol is one that is refined enough you can take it internally, and there are other brands as well, but do your homework. Taking the wrong kind internally can hurt you. http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp?id=OO-1002#.Ud4zHPksng8

@flow, it’s caused by yeast.

I got thrush from using an inhaler and forgetting to rinse out my mouth afterwards. It ran across the tip of my tongue from one side to the other. I started out by using apple cider vinegar, swishing it around in my mouth for a few minutes. I could feel the vinegar fizzing where the thrush was. After the first session, the evidence was gone, but the thrush came right back because I was using sugar based cough drops, and yeast loves sugar. The next time I used the vinegar my tongue was quite sore because I had some pretty raw places on it where the thrush was.

Today I bought some gentian violet and tried that. It’s messy, it stains, and it turns your tongue purple. You have to be very careful to dry out your mouth before you apply it, which I did. Then I sat there trying to let the gentian violet dry on my tongue as much as possible. I put cotton balls in my mouth to soak up saliva and sat there with my tongue hanging out for a while.

It left a bitter taste in my mouth, and for several hours I spit out my saliva rather than swallow it, but so far the results are excellent.

I hate to use artificial sweetener, but for the time being I’m going to use sugar free cough drops until this problem is resolved.

@snowberry Thanks for that. I have really started turning around my diet. I was by all accounts suffering from malnutrition (long story). I also ate too little. I have started to slowly remove all sugar, animal fat and am planning to stick to mostly fresh vegetables, lean protein in small amounts, fruit and water. I have eliminated caffeine which I was addicted to.

I have also added probiotic yoghurts natural. Made my own muesli as I have found most brands in the UK add sugar sodium and fat, so pointless. I use raw oats (that are mostly gluten free just trace elements) dried fruit sugar free, sesame seeds and almonds. I eat this with the yoghurt. I cannot give up honey I won’t cope!

Also trying to stick to alkaline foods which all sounds great but I did binge on absolute rubbish the other night. I NEVER eat McDonalds but due to the italian restaurant being closed settled for that. So few eat outs in the village I live. So yeah, YUK! The cold drink Oasis tasted like a bunch of chemicals to me and I threw it into the garbage.

I have never really been a big fan on ‘junk’ food but my main issues are sugar cravings and salt cravings. Will keep you posted on my progress!

I love the word rubbish. Sounds much better than trash or garbage.

Oh, gentian violet is not supposed to be taken internally (forgot to mention that). This is why I spit out my saliva for a few hours after. Still, it can’t be too bad if they wipe out babies’ mouths with it per @Judi‘s answer

My daughter is still alive at 32. Don’t see any damage. It was gone the next day and never came back.

Three treatments using gentian violet seems to have resolved the problem. It was not difficult, but it was a hassle, messy, and somewhat unpleasant, but so far there is no thrush. It’s also a cheap fix. PM me for details if you want.
