Why is it that generic nacho cheese tortilla chips never taste as good as Doritos?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) July 12th, 2013

They are usually very thin, not very crunchy and go stale as soon as you open the bag. You’d think at least one chip manufacturer could come up with a decent knock off. Does Lay’s prevent it?

I really wish there was a decent, cheaper alternative to Doritos.

@talljasperman Thank you. I’m sure those are good, but those are cheese doodles. I was talking about nacho cheese tortilla chips.

@marinelife Never tried Trader Joe’s. We don’t have any of those stores near us. Now I want some.

Maybe they are laced with LSD, or eaten quickly after pot smoking… something addictive is added to the Doritos. Also it could be the marketing from Stephen Colbert.

@talljasperman has the answer. It’s not “crunch”, it’s crack.

From having experience working as a mechanic in the food industry the answer is quite simple, Frito Lay likely just uses better ingredients so of course you’ll pay more for the better chip. Imitation cheese vs natural cheese, natural spices vs artificial flavoring, less processing, etc. I don’t see the generic brands knocking Dorito’s chips off of the store shelves anytime soon.

@Paradox25 There’s something very wrong with the idea of “imitation cheese”

Flavored tortilla chips are nasty. You need to get your flavor from a good homemade dip or salsa. A good name brand tortilla chip would be Tostitos or Santitas.

@Blueroses I actually meant more processed cheese, or in other words not as good.
