What brands of Greek Yogurt are your favorite and why?

Asked by keobooks (14322points) July 15th, 2013

I had some Greek yogurt at on a vacation and I really loved it. I tried buying it at home and was sadly disappointed with the inconsistent quality of the yogurt. Sometimes it is smooth and creamy—just the way I remember. Other times it’s sour and gloppy. This is within the same brand and flavor of yogurt.

So I just wondered which Greek yogurts other people bought and had good luck with. So far, I’ve had the best luck with Mueller.

I buy plain, non-fat greek yogurt. I find Oikos consistently good.

Oikos was the brand I had on vacation. I just got a “bad” one this morning though. Maybe I was just unlucky or bought a bad flavor. On vacation, I had strawberry flavored every morning and it was creamy and perfect.

I like Trader Joe’s Greek yogurt.

I buy store brands’ yogurt – Stop and Shop, Shoprite, whatever. I buy vanilla flavor and I chop up walnuts and add them, and sometimes may add some blueberries too.

I never did like any kind of yogurt with that jelly-like fruit in the bottom. To me, it’s just sweet and unnecessary calories.

I used to like Trader Joe’s but I didn’t like that it’s expensive (compared to other store brands) and it went from 6 oz. to 5.3 oz. and is still in the same size cup (with more empty space in the cup now) and price went up while number of ounces went down. I did like the flavor, though. Vanilla, like the other Greek store brands.

I also like to mix vanilla yogurt with blueberries, bananas and walnuts for breakfast. I like Dannon’s vanilla the best for that.

When I buy Greek yogurt, I usually get the flavored Chobani ones. They seem to be fairly consistently good.

I like plain non-fat greek yogurt the most from Fage.

Fage Total 2% plain

Why? It tastes so much better than every other brand.

Chobani is my favorite.

I too have bought into the new “Greek Yogurt” fad.

Which makes sense I guess.

“French Yogurt” is taken, many Americans actually hate America and figure Dannon is made by slave labor or has salmonella or something, and I don’t think anybody is likely to buy “Japanese Yogurt”

Having said it, I like Fage. I like the way the fruit in one little compartment, and the plain yogurt in another. You fold the little compartment over and dump or scoop the stuff into the plain yogurt. It is an intriguing process. Plus, the container looks bigger than it really is, since the ingredients are divided. It makes you imagine you are paying more to get more.

Cabot plain greek yogurt made with 2% milk. It has the most protein per serving. I get that too when some tubs of it are better than others. I hate when it’s chunky. The flavor differs, too, but I like the sourness at any level.

@dxs: “Cabot plain greek yogurt made with 2% milk. It has the most protein per serving.”

It appears to have significantly-less protein than most of the Greek yogurts sold around here. My favorite has 20g per 7oz. The Cabot has 16g per 8oz.

@tom_g Once again the internet is wrong. I look at it specifically in stores. It has 22grams per 8oz in stores, more than most others. I should’ve said that Chobani has an extra gram per serving (23g), but it’s not worth the big difference in price.

^^ Ouch. They need to fire their marketing department now. It’s also probably quite illegal to have this on their site.

dxs's avatar

@tom_g Actually, you were looking at the wrong yogurt. This is the one I buy.

Cool. The power of links.

@tom_g But I still trust my real life experiences over internet links.

I love Greek Yoghurt. I don’t know what brand the one we normally eat is. It’s not a major, commercial brand so I doubt it would help anyway.

After eating the Greek stuff for over 2 years (post weight loss surgery at the advice of the surgeon because Greek has more protein than regular), I would find regular yogurt to be watery and too sweet now. I don’t pay for water, I pay for yogurt.
