Any suggestions for a wedding dance between step-father and step-daughter?

Asked by filmfann (52224points) July 15th, 2013

When I married my wife, her daughter was 5 years old. She didn’t have a good relationship with her father, and only saw him a few times every year, though in the last 5 years it has gotten better. She says she considers me to be her father, but I understand I am her step father.
And I don’t dance.
Any ideas?

Not even a brief little shuffle? Or a clumsy waltz step? Are you able to walk?

You two should be able to come up with a creative solution, graceful or not. You two love each other, or so you seem to be implying.

The choreography is less important than the implication.

Are you looking for music suggestions or a way to bow out of it? You can certainly hold her and move a bit somehow.

Play a song like “Wind Beneath My Wings” (or whatever it’s called) and everyone will be bawling so hard they won’t notice your dancing.

How about “My Girl” by the Temptations? It’s such a lovely song, its lyrics aren’t necessarily romantic, and there’s no mention of a father or daughter. “My Girl” could express how much you and your step-daughter love each other, but without usurping her biological father’s role or making him feel sad.

As for your dancing skills, all you need to do is move to the song’s rhythm (not the tune, but the rhythm) and do some leading. If you spend an hour getting some instructions from a kind, female friend, you should be fine. Just select the song you’d like to use, and ask your friend to walk you through it — literally.

By the way, you seem to be a lovely and loving man. Your wife and step-daughter are lucky to have you in their lives.

My step-father and I danced to “I Loved Her First,” but that’s a country song and may not be your thing.

What about a Step Dance?

I have always been partial to the Loudon Wainright song That’s My Daughter

or perhaps Paul Simons’ Father and Daughter.

How about the Landler from The Sound of Music? See here:

Just Google “Landler wedding” for more examples of folks practicing and doing the dance.

Faith Hill’s, There You’ll Be

My favorite would be, He Didn’t Have to Be.

@2davidc8 I love, love, love that song!

I wish I liked country music. I’m sure they have the perfect song somewhere, but if they don’t, someone should write one.

This is probably not the right one for the Father/Daughter dance, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of It

I don’t think it matters at all that you are not the biological dad, you were her father in all ways that matter. Here is a Song that you might consider.

This One is also pretty nice.

I used Wind Beneath My Wings, but it is an older song, maybe she wants something more current? I also have heard Because You Love Me by Celine Dion used. Both might be overboard for a stepfather situation, only the bride can judge of course. I am not saying in any way that you were not just like a father to her, I just am saying it varies of course. Will her biological father be at the wedding?

Don’t worry about the dancing, a slower song you just basically step left to right. Practice one time, even if it is with your wife, so you feel comfortable moving to the beat of the song.

@JLeslie brings up a good point. You could do “Butterfly Kisses” or something really sentimental if he’s not there, but if he’s there it might be awkward.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@Judi There are about a million of these on YouTube, but yes, I agree they’re great.

But oh, how I hate that Butterfly Kisses song.

Judi's avatar

I don’t like butterfly kisses either and that’s why I think this is great. Everyone thinks its going to be normal sappy crap then they cut loose!

Only a suggestion, filmfann.
How about Billy Joel’s ’‘Goodnight My Angel”

Upon further review, that should be:

“Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)”

(and yes, I know it’s not spelled right…..take that up with Billy)
