What does 'bang ding ow' mean?

Asked by nmguy (528points) July 17th, 2013

Bay Area tv station KTVU is being sued for using phonetically embarrassing names of the pilots of the Korean plane that landed short of the runway. I’m having trouble figuring out what one of the names Bang Ding Ow means. Can anyone explain?

Plane made a bang on the runway, ding was heard, everyone said “ow”.

Or something like that.

I don’t understand why the jokey names were not caught by either the intern or the anchor before they were read on air.

I think it means “Everybody’s a fuckin’ comedian…”

@jca :: I think it is the product of needing to be before Twitter. To hell with reading things first!!

Onomatopoeia..Sound effects.

Bang. Could equally be clang, crash, whang.
Ding. Could easily be dent, bend, fold

Ouch.

Similar to reading a Batman comic book. BANG! DING! OW!

I’m the only person in my office who understood this. Not sure why it’s a problem.

I denno but it sounds like rap lyrics.

The three joke names that preceded it supply the context that gives it meaning as sound effects.

I’ve never heard anyone before ask for the meaning of “bang.”

I think they weren’t caught, @jca, because in the heat of an unfolding story a broadcaster might just read what’s handed to her without processing it mentally. But the fact that those names were displayed onscreen too, and for several long seconds, ought to have given someone enough time to hit the Offline button.

If I had to guess, I’d guess that whoever perpetrated this tasteless prank didn’t expect it to go so far. (And I don’t believe the extremely convenient “intern” story.)
