Can anybody think of anything positive to say about this creation?

Asked by Jeruba (55829points) July 23rd, 2013

I can’t believe she looked in the mirror before she went out. Not a full-length one, anyway.

[ Cate in fashion monstrosity ]

I take this sort of thing a little bit personally.

I’m on my iPhone and I just get a black screen when I hit your link.

Jeruba's avatar

Here’s a different link. Does this work?

Judi's avatar

Oh. Finally saw it. An Oompa Loompa dress?

bob_'s avatar

It sends a message to fashion-conscious kids to stay off drugs.

linguaphile's avatar

Laughing! An upside down vase dress. That has to be the inspiration, a vase that fell off a shelf.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

It looks better when plugged in.

Berserker's avatar

It comes off.

But d00d wtf, the top part looks like one of those suits for scuba diving. The bottom is actually cool, would look way nicer with any kind of top that isn’t that one. Ugh.

Your next avatar better not be wearing that.

augustlan's avatar

Holy cow, that is awful. Maybe she owed somebody a favor. Or lost a bet…

johnpowell's avatar

I wouldn’t wear it. But I don’t think it is hideous. My money is on that she knew people would give her shit for it and her name would be all over the internet for wearing it. And really, all that is important is that people are talking about you. Good or bad, it doesn’t really matter.

Buttonstc's avatar

I’m guessing it was really hot outside and she thought this looked like it might keep her cool and comfortable.

Obviously she wasn’t overly concerned with the other type of “cool” :)

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

It looks like a jellyfish. I like jellyfish. Some of my best friends are jellies.

flutherother's avatar

The colour suits her?

LuckyGuy's avatar

The heels pull it all together?
Why am I thinking of the Ding Dong School bell ?

ucme's avatar

Looks like she was sprayed in marshmallow foam & partially dragged through an industrial shredder.
I’ve always thought she looks ill anyway.

cookieman's avatar

I like the color. It looks good on her. I also think the bottom half is fun and interesting.

I just don’t like how it fits together with that bazaar top half. @linguaphile‘s “upside down vase” explanation is spot on.

It’s more a costume than dress.

Regardless, her skin is beautiful.

elbanditoroso's avatar

The top is much prettier than the bottom.

downtide's avatar

At least the shoes match, right?

ccrow's avatar

The most positive thing I can think of is thank God I don’t have to wear it… and the shoes look uncomfortable, too.

CWOTUS's avatar

Well, the seam seems nice and straight, and the shoes match. It’s a good color for her. The trailing edge of the skirt will help to obliterate her track in the woods.

That’s about it. I can’t think of any other positives.

Katniss's avatar

That is hideous! Even the color is awful.
The only positive thing that I can say is that she’s still beautiful.
But WTF was she thinking? Did she lose a bet?
Maybe she has a fashion designer friend and was doing them a favor?
Oy!

Pachy's avatar

I love the color and I love Cate. I think she’d look beautiful in a bearskin.

bookish1's avatar

Uh, it looks like a Star Trek costume. And Star Trek is cool…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I’m thinking the cat OD’ed on cotton candy and Pepto Bismol and then hacked up a giant hairball to go with it. And then they made a dress out of it.

muppetish's avatar

I clicked the link with an open mind and tried, really tried, but all I can muster is that her hair and makeup look lovely. Everything from the neck down, however..

SadieMartinPaul's avatar

She’s trying to stand out from the crowd and get attention. I’d say that she’s succeeding very well.

I do think that the outfit is hideous, and I admire her for having the self-confidence to wear it in public.

Supacase's avatar

No. I’m speechless.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Blech! And it’s so matchy matchy. Hell, it’s practically the color of her skin. And the blush? Horrible.

Something positive? I got nothing.

CWOTUS's avatar

@Jeruba since Cate usually has such good sense about things (or so it would seem), is it possible that she’s wearing this as a favor to a friend who designed it, perhaps? Surely she would know that it’s at least “somewhat” unbecoming to most people (and probably quite ridiculous to her, too), but like Jerry Seinfeld in the “puffy shirt” ... maybe she’s trying to avoid hurting someone’s feelings by wearing it.

Lord knows how much macaroni-themed “jewelry” my mother wore back in the day.

Sunny2's avatar

A friend offered her $500,000 for her favorite charity if she’d wear it, so she was doing her charitable duty. The friend’s son designed it and wanted the publicity. The look on her face makes it obvious she was coerced to wear it.

Berserker's avatar

@bookish1 I agree, Star Trek is cool; but that dress looks like an Ass Butt costume.

Jeruba's avatar

@Sunny2, is that your guess, or did you see that written up someplace? (Source?)

Sunny2's avatar

Um. . .I made it up ?

tranquilsea's avatar

Meh I like it when people take chances with fashion. So many clothes are just plain BORING.

Jeruba's avatar

Sounded so credible, @Sunny2.

I did a little research, though, and found at least three fashion-related sources that thought it was a great outfit. They didn’t even seem to have a struggle about it.

I have no idea what their credibility is because I normally pay no attention to them, but one of them said something about Cate’s bold fashion sense. Okay, it does seem to be that.

When I saw how long the train was, I thought of @CWOTUS‘s remark: The trailing edge of the skirt will help to obliterate her track in the woods. She can come out when she’s changed.

bookish1's avatar

Oh @Symbeline, how I love it when you talk dirty!!

crushingandreaming's avatar

It sends a message to fashion-conscious kids to stay off drugs.
