How accurate is Credit Karma?

Asked by seekingwolf (10410points) July 24th, 2013

It puts my score at around 720. This seems high to me.

I have 2 credit cards, one is a CapitalOne student card and the other is a AE Blue card. I have a total of $3k available credit and have over a year of paying on time, no interest charges. Nothing negative on my credit report.

I charge all my gas and groceries to the card and pay it off each payday.

Given my short time having a credit card, I’m not sure if this score is accurate.

Thoughts?

CK doesn’t calculate your score itself. Rather, it gets it through Trans Union and displays it to you. So if it is wrong, it is based on the credit bureau’s assessment, not Karma’s.

If you want to be totally compulsive about this, go directly to one of the services (Equifax, for example), pay the $9.99 and get your score directly.

I may look into that sometime, not sure. Your answer is pretty reassuring. I just am surprised. I basically went from 0 to 700s in one year. That’s insane. I thought it would take me years to get to 800.

@seekingwolf You should be very proud of that! :0)

@seekingwolf Going from 720 to 800 is a longer haul. You didn’t start at zero – below about 650 is considered poor credit, not no credit. You established a history that reflects well on you, and over time, it will continue to improve as you demonstrate your creditworthiness.

That’s probably accurate. You’ve paid for 12 months with no bumps. If someone is a bad credit risk it usually shows up fairly quickly.

You can actually get a free credit report once a year directly from one of the three credit reporting companies. I always get it from TransUnion.

Here is the site for your free anual credit report. It will give you a lot more info than Credit Karma does.

Yep I have used free annual credit report. It’s a good site. I don’t have anything bad on my report. Just the 2 cards I have.

I’m going to shoot for 800 and just try to keep doing what I’m doing because I know someday I’ll want to get a car loan or something.
