How to write a diary gift inscription for a significant other?

Asked by whiteyoshi (18points) July 28th, 2013

I’ve purchased a diary for my boyfriends birthday, as he likes to write. I would like to write an inscription on the front page, but I’m no good at getting thoughts into words. I’d like it to be short and sweet, and the message I’d like to get across is that the diary will be not only a place for him to dream, reflect and remember, but also a reminder that anything he shares with the pages, I hope that he may also feel safe to share with me if he needs to. (because I will always be here for him type of thing). So the diary is not only a private space for him to reflect upon himself but also a book to remind him that I am always here for him.. No idea how to write this thought out more cleverly and beautifully in a couple sentences. Can anyone help me possibly get a start or give me something I can work from?

Your words seem to express it very well. Just change the pronouns:

“This diary is to be not only a place for you to dream, reflect and remember, but also to serve as a reminder that anything you share with these pages, I hope that you may also feel safe to share with me if you need to, because I will always be here for you.”

“A place to keep your thoughts and ideas and feelings and all that makes you who you are, for those times when I am not right there to listen to you.”

I am as close as these pages.

I second what @marinelife says; you already have some beautiful words right there for your inscription.

By the way, as a writer myself I think this is a wonderful and very thoughtful gift.

Writing is simply the act of putting down in words the thoughts you have in your head. You did that in your question: “This diary will be not only a place for you to dream, reflect and remember, but also a reminder that anything you shares with the pages I hope you’ll also feel safe to share with me if you need to” is as good and genuine as writing gets.

A lovely, thoughtful gift…

Thank you all for your advice and kind words! As of now my inscription will be:

“This diary is not only a place for you to dream, to reflect, and to remember, but also a reminder that you will always have my love and support if you ever wish to share the thoughts on these pages.
Love always.. ”

Now I just need to practice some neat handwriting!
