Will the new Star Wars films completely ignore/contradict the Expanded Universe?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) July 29th, 2013

They did say that the new Star Wars films would be original stories. But you could technically translate that however you wish. I mean, original stories that won’t mess with the Expanded Universe? Original stories that have characters from the EU without necessarily adapting any EU story?

I’m only a fan of the EU to an extent. The classic stories such as The Thrawn Trilogy, really up until the Jacen and Jaina adventures ended. I sort of liked the New Jedi Order and the Vong thing, but I haven’t read much to really develop a full opinion, yet I liked how they finally killed a character or two, being that Star Wars has been all happily ever after until that point. The stuff after the Vong has been completely ridiculous (basically everyone dies and the whole Galactic Civil War is repeating itself). I haven’t read any of them but the synopsis and I’m like, “Okay, no.”

I was just wondering in the end if there’s any more news, however rumored they are, about what the news films will be about.

I don’t know enough about Star Wars in general, let alone the specific plot line you reference in your question, but I know enough about movie making to assure you the producer, writer and director will do anything they can to attract the most number of ticket buyers, both longtime SW fans like you and new ones who know little to nothing about previous episodes. If that means sticking to old characters and plotlines or dumping them, that’s what they’ll do.

For some reason I feel Disney is going to utterly and completely fuck the EU. Look at what’s been done with Marvel… The whole original story thing is the part that concerns me.

I know they won’t do Thrawn, (they’ve already said that much) it just wouldn’t make sense since that only happened 5 years after RotJ (Pellaeon better be in this movie as head of the empire though :P)

I don’t mind if they go off the path of the big 3 or their children, that’s fine, it’s a huge universe. I’m just going to get major nerd rage when they start contradicting other things that happened in the EU.

@ScottyMcGeester Legacy and Fate of the Jedi are both pretty good IMO. I think Fate of the Jedi is better than Legacy was though. (I’m currently reading Crucible which takes place after FotJ. It’s pretty cool since they’re finally taking into account the fact that Luke, Leia, and Han are all in their 70’s-80’s)

Count on it being completely ignored.

The new Trek movie ignored the Trek novels completely. Expected, but annoying.

Idk, just excited overall about the project.

What is the Expanded Universe?

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Rarebear 90% of star wars mythos. Everything that isn’t in the movies, so novels, comics, games, tv shows etc.

Rarebear's avatar

@uberbatman Ah, thanks for the clarification. I only read two Star Wars novels in the late ‘70s and moved on. I’m more of a Star Trek guy anyway.

Known JJ Abrams, he’s going to completely ignore any canon and just do a bang-up action-adventure movie like he did in the Star Treks.

It should be noted that, so far, Peter Mayhew is not listed in the cast.

SPOILER ALERT

( In the EU, Chewbacca died)

@Seek_Kolinahr But isn’t it because this is a NEW Star Trek universe? Therefore everything that happened prior is in an alternate timeline and is irrelevant?

Seek's avatar

Nope. Khan left earth in the Botany Bay long before First Contact with the Vulcans, during the Eugenics Wars. He was not frozen on earth in torpedo tubes. The idea is just stupid, really.

ScottyMcGeester's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr But I mean to say that EVERYTHING is alternated now. I think they made up the plot in the first one merely to be a convenient excuse to switch things up. Not just Kirk and his crew, but the entire universe is altered, as well as its events and people. In other words, the fact that Khan had a different origin story in the first series is irrelevant, because now he has a new origin story from a new timeline of events.

ScottyMcGeester's avatar

Oh wait, but Khan was born before any of that happened. I see what you’re saying. Nevermind.

Seek's avatar

They couldn’t alter events that occurred 100 years before the change happened, hon. The alteration in the timeline happened long after Khan stole the Botany Bay.

Ha ha, there you go.

WELL, fuck. Then I guess Star Wars will be a bit different. I mean, George is still as creative consultant. That COULD count for something if he brings up the EU, if he even cares to acknowledge it. But I don’t think creative consultant means you have a right to directly influence the plot of the movie, since JJ kind of owns it now. I mean, only if JJ were to agree, I guess George could influence whatever they decide to write up.

It’s not that much of a big deal, but I would have loved to see some characters at least. Mara Jade for example (Star Wars desperately needed more female roles), or Boba Fett being brought back having survived the Sarlaac.

Of course, all the actors from the original trilogy are older now. And George meant to have them be older. It could just ALLL take place after whatever the latest story is and not have to touch upon anything.

I could not care less. I have never read any star wars books, or star trek books.
All that is relevant to me are what is on film.
Also, we are talking about jar jar abrams here. All he ever does is fuck things up.

filmfann's avatar

@ragingloli You mean All that is relevant to me is what is in the Original Trilogy.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Honestly, the movies are my least favorite part of the Star Wars Universe :P

Rarebear's avatar

I agree with @ragingloli although I like JJ more. He is what he is, lens flares and all. I have a good friend of mine who worked with him as a VFX guy in Super 8 and he said he’s good to work with.

I’m not sure how old @ragingloli is, but I’m nearly 50. In the ‘70s, James Blish wrote short stories of each of the Star Trek episodes, and I read all of those as a kid when they came out. Alan Dean Foster wrote the stories of the animated series, and those were better written. I also read Spock Must Die, but after that my interest tailed off. I also read the one of the first Star Wars Sequel “Splinter of the Mind’s Eye”.

After those though, after the books in Star Trek and Star Wars exploded in the ‘80s, I lost interest. I may have picked up one or two over the years, but generally I don’t like canon novels as they’re constrained by their respective universes.

I don’t know if ya’ll have heard but Disney is redoing the canon. They are looking into everything and making a new canon. So I guess there’s my answer.
