Could I have some advice on this drawing please?

Asked by greenbean3 (252points) August 6th, 2013

I started this picture a few days ago and I have been playing around with it but can’t figure out how to finish the shadows and shading. If anyone can tell me how to finish them, and maybe give me some advice on how to go about doing the lips, hair and ears I’d appreciate it.

Welcome to fluther. Would it be okay for me to print it out and try a few things? I’m thinking a lighter shading of the cheekbones, a little more definition of the lips and mouth, the hair looks good. It’s very good so far. Nicely done.

I have no artistic ability whatsoever.

I think you’ve done an amazing job. Very very cool!

@Adirondackwannabe sure, take it and do whatever you like! The guy I’m trying to draw is Richard Ramirez (he was on TV as I was trying to think of something to draw so I thought I would have a try at him), just if you wanted a picture for reference.

@Katniss Thanks a lot, it’s the first time I have tried a face on a graphics tablet, so I’m glad it’s okay!

@greenbean3 I was on the right track, just needed a little experimentation. I shaded the cheekbones a little in pencil, but it didn’t look quite right, so I started erasing it. It also erased a little of the print, making the cheekbones lighter. But it looked good, so I did a little more lightening of the cheekbones and then the chin. It made him pop out of the drawing. I also defined the mouth a little more and defined the outside of the cheekbones. Wow, it looks amazing.

@greenbean3 Your drawing/painting is very similar to my daughters work too. Yes, well done, you’ve got talent kid!
I agree with a little more shading, highlighting around the mouth. I will send this my artist daughter for her critique. :-)
Ewww…Richard Ramirez….maybe John Wayne Gacy and his clown costume is next? lol

@Coloma Jeffrey Dahmer! He was far more interesting.

@Adirondackwannabe Are you going to show us your work?

@greenbean3 You’re welcome :0)

@Adriondackwannabe Thanks a bunch, I will add some more light to his face and work on the cheekbones, I knew something was missing around that area but couldn’t figure out what! Also, as @Katniss suggested, could I see what you’ve done? It would certainly help.

@Coloma I would love to see what your Daughter says, thanks! And John Wayne Gacy isn’t a bad idea actually, I’d be able to put more colours in haha!

@Katniss You know what, I’m just going to go ahead and draw everyone, Ramirez, Gacy, Dahmer and Bundy!

@Katniss Let me try. I’ll try to scan it.

@greenbean3 That would be very cool. Call me a freak, but I’m fascinated by serial killers. lol Don’t forget Ed Gein and Aileen Wuornos!

@Adirondackwannabe I hope it works! We’d love to see it.

@Katniss Exactly the same here! I’m always watching and reading about them, it’s such an interesting subject, may as well throw Charles Manson in the mix too.

What did Jeffrey Dahmer sing on the way to his fridge?

” My baloney has a first name..” lol

I used to be fascinated with serial killers in my youth too….you guys should read up on Edmund Kemper. A California killer in the 70’s, and…. sorry for going kinda off topic but…I lived 10 doors down from a murdered family who was slaughtered by the infamous ” Sacramento Vampire killer” Richard Trenton Chase in the late 70’s. I was sooo scared living alone at age 18. 0-o

@Coloma Ahahahahaha!!!! That was a good one!
AND! Holy shit! How scary!!

I think that your problem is trying to decide where the lighting is origination from. In the picture that you offer it looks like a flash bulb went off directly in the subjects face.

Re-make the picture with the light coming from from the left or right and you’ll have a much better picture.

Alright, you’re doing what I used to do when I was starting out. You haven’t chosen a singular light source. You’re using shadows to indicate “depth” – distance from the viewer – but if you were working from a reference photo, you would see that that’s not how light works in real life. You need to pick one place – it can be anywhere, really – where the light is emanating from, and put highlights where the light would strike, and shadows where the light would be blocked.

If you’re making this drawing from print media, you can’t adjust the lighting except theoretically. You need to get yourself a live model,
so that you can shift the lighting around and see what happens. I think, with respect to @Adirondackwannabe, that trying to figure this out on a wholly theoretical basis is a fool’s errand.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@susanc I got it to come out super, I just can’t get it from the disk to fluther. It’s actually a creepy picture when I got done with it.

@gondwanalon and @Mariah I actually like having dark shadows on both sides of the face, I think it makes him look more sinister than having them on one side. If I keep the shadows as they are does it still look okay, or are there shadows coming from nowhere? When I first started the picture, my friend said I had random shadows being made by locks of hair that weren’t there . What I mean is are the shadows possible?

@Adirondackwannabe if you can’t upload the image, don’t worry about it, I can still make changes based on what you said.

Mariah's avatar

Yeah that’s the problem, that lighting isn’t realistic. Shadows can’t really fall that way. You can still have shadows on both sides of you choose an actual light source, just make it a dim one perhaps.

Coloma's avatar

^^^ But….surrealistic, abstract art is not meant to be realistic..I think the 3d effect of the lighting is interesting. Art…who can really critique it, not I. I just know what catches my eye and what doesn’t.

greenbean3's avatar

@Coloma Hm, you’re right, I think I will keep it as it is, I’ve never been able to get my art to look realistic anyway, I’m better at the almost cartoon like style in the picture. Also, I’m getting sick of looking at Remirez all day haha.
