What to do about my travel?

Asked by Mp123 (317points) August 7th, 2013

So Monday, I’m going to be traveling. I’m doing one week somewhere, and the second week in Vegas. I have 3 weeks off and I don’t want to come back to my country right away. Do you have an idea of what I could do that is not too expensive? I wouldn’t mind staying in Vegas or going to Miami or anything ! I just want to be somewhere else but not kill myself over the prices lol

You need to let us know what your interests are and what your financial limitations are (you do realize that Miami is nowhere near Vegas?). If this is your first visit to the US, for God’s sake don’t spend the whole time in Vegas. That place is the pits (some people love Vegas, I find it entirely artificial and annoying).

At the very least, you should visit the Grand Canyon, which is not far from Vegas. Seattle, San Diego, and San Francisco are fun. Fly over to Yellowstone, Glacier, and the Grand Tetons. Or go all the way east and visit New York, DC, or Key West.

Loll I have to do my research! .. New York sounds fun too! I like arts, music, party, meeting new people, meditation, the beach! Since im going to the Caribbean then Vegas I will already spend a lot of money so i figure max 600 for the last week :S @syz

A week in Vegas is a long time in my opinion, unless you love that sort of thing. I like Vegas, but for a long weekend.

I am assuming you realize Vegas and Miami are far apart. I just saw you are going to the Caribbean, you do relize the Caribbean is next to Miami, Florida right? You can take a Cruise from Miami or Ft. lauderdale and see some of the Caribbean islands if you like cruises. Last minute they are usually very good prices. They have 4,5 and 7 day cruises to the Caribbean. As far as art New York is one of the best cities, if you are interested in going to a big city. Washington DC, which is around a 4 hour train ride from NY, is our bation’s Capitol, which you probably know, and has fantastic museums and parts of it are beautiful. It’s a “low” city, nothing can be built taller than the Wahington monument.

When you say you’re “doing one week somewhere” it would help to know where it is. Is it in the US? Also, what is your budget? In addition, do you want to relax or do you want a busy, sightseeing vacation?

A week in Vegas is a long time, as @JLeslie said, unless you rent a car and do some sightseeing outside the strip. You could drive to the Grand Canyon during your Vegas week, or drive around and look at real estate if that kind of thing interests you. You could also do a day trip up to Mount Charleston, which is very relaxing. I think about 4 days in Las Vegas is ideal. It’s hectic and fun but for me, enough’s enough.

From there, you could drive over to Lake Tahoe and continue on to Big Sur, Carmel, Hearst Castle (coast of California) which is all beautiful and incredible to see. That’s what I would probably do. I would probably try to continue on up the coast as far as possible. Again, to advise you, it would help to know your other plans and budget.

You want to spend a third week somewhere for $600? That won’t get you very much.
Since you are in Vegas, you could take a bus to Yosemite and spend a few days in nature, but even camping is probably going to cost you more than you have budgeted.

I missed the $600. Is that US dollars for a hotel room, food, and travel to the new destination?

Where are you flying in from? Where do you live? Flights are probably cheaper Jamaica to Miami, and then Miami to Vegas. But, I could be wrong.

Ohh okay I will look into it! ... I live in Canada (Montreal) @JLeslie

From Montreal, NY is a hop, skip and a jump. NYC is a lot like Montreal, with your city being a little cleaner I would say, but there are many beautiful areas in NYC. You can go down to NY any time very easily and also see upstate NY or Vermont and then south to NYC, so maybe you would prefer to do that during a different vacation.

Jamaica to Vegas. Pretty big jump in terms of environment and interests here.

What are your plans for Jamaica?

What are you going to do in Vegas?

Are you renting vehicles to get around or depend on taxi/public transport?

You should just go to NYC AKA the center of the universe after Las Vegas. Seriously, anything else is just a waste of time.

Mp123's avatar

YeaYea that’s what I thought too ! I guess I’ll just go next time or I was thinking of coming back to Montreal then leave for Ny something like that @JLeslie

@rojo I’m going to Jamaica because I just love the vibe there! I’ll probably be staying at a resort or villa but i would be out of the resort or villa everyday to visit the country, I will be ziplining, horseback ride all the activities i could do in a week. A lot of partying too :p and eating!!

Vegas is more for my friend birthday who decided to celebrate it there _ personally i would rather do 2week in Jamaica instead of one!

@Michael_Huntington yea? What is there to do ? Are there any special event in the month of August ? thank you

There is a ton to do in NY! Ellis, Island, Statue if Liberty, Central Park, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, ground zero, tons of shopping with most clothing no tax, beautiful churches, Museum of Natural History, river cruise, botanical gardens, subway museum, even the beach, although I haven’t been out to the beaches there in along time, I don’t know what it is like. Oh, and the food. Montreal has great food too. Often there are free concerts in central park during the summer, you could google events in august in NYC or free in NY and probably get a bunch of stuff to pop up.

I hope you are going to do some research before you just arrive in these cities. Have you been looking n the web? Gone to a book store and glanced through some travel books?

Mp123's avatar

@JLeslie As for Jamaica, yes everything is pretty much planned out. For LA, my friend is taking care of it so I didn’t really look into it until this week :/ but I will and if I’m not prepared, I guess I’ll just come back to Canada after-_-

JLeslie's avatar

Would you vacation like that in Canada? Victoria, Banff, Toronto, Calgary in one month? It isn’t like your country is smaller east to went than the US.

Sometimes we get fluther questions about travelling here and the people are from countries with very small and mass and don’t really understand how long it takes to travel frome one place to another.

Mp123's avatar

@JLeslie Actually no I wouldn’t do Toronto- Calgary because of the travel time. You’re right I look into it for las vegas to New York for example and it’s far! Me and my friends are rearranging our travel tonight ! Thank you

JLeslie's avatar

Yeah, gotta look at a map. Even when I plan travel all in ne Province I look at travel times and if it is worth the time spent to see the one other city, etc. Sounds like you have it under control now. Nce you decide on your cities you can always ask best things to see in a particular city or within a short distance. Many people here suggested Grand Canyon if you go to Vegas, I realy like the Hoover Damn tour that is close to Vegas.
