(NSFW) Is "self-pleasure" necessary for humans to live?

Asked by Mr_Saturn512 (558points) August 9th, 2013

This is a serious question, I don’t mean to be rude or anything. But from a biological standpoint, masturbation and sex fascinates me. But I read something the other day that said males must masturbate at some point. Is that true? Sounds strange, but they were adamant about it. Do they mean like. . .you would die or something or be really unhealthy if you NEVER EVER masturbate your entire life? Is masturbation like one of those necessary bodily function like burping and farting that everyone obviously does but is too embarrassed to admit it? Interestingly enough though, the same person I read this from mentioned that women don’t need to masturbate as much as men do, something like that.

On a side note, I’m confused whether or not masturbation prevents or can lead to prostate cancer. I read a lot of studies done saying that it can do both depending on your age. If you masturbate a lot in your younger years, something about the hormones possibly leading to prostate cancer. But when you’re much older, masturbation becomes beneficial as you are essentially “flushing things out” of your system. Then most I read mention the latter, but not the former. Or vice versa. So I don’t know which is really true.

I don’t masturbate (I am a male). Ever. Seriously no exaggeration. I am a Christian, but it has to do more that I have no urge, desire, or addiction to do so.

No, it’s not necessary, though most people do it. Men will tend to have nocturnal emissions (wet dreams) if they don’t masturbate or have sex on a regular basis, though.

Haha….no infact, sexual drive is the FIRST thing to go when matters of survival are at “hand.” pun intended
The human organism does not waste it’s precious survival energy on orgasmic release. That energy is best spent making hay while the sun shines, not making whoopee in the hay. lol
Masturbation for sexual and tension release is normal, healthy and part of human physiology, but….nobody has ever died from lack of sex.

No, but it helps.

Men that don’t masturbate won’t die. They might kill someone else, though.

Yeah, many people do, and the urge can be quite strong, but others don’t, libido is different for everyone and can change over time. In the more obvious case, there are asexuals who do not have any particular sex urge at all, and they seem just fine (well, no worse then the rest of us). Masturbation is nice (for those that are interested), and shaming it and trying to suppress the urge in those that have (or, alternately, trying to force it on those that don’t) it can lead to some pretty terrible results, but that’s more about society then the act itself.

As to masturbation and prostate cancer, there apparently is a connection, but it seems like most studies show the relation going the other way, in that frequent masturbation is a symptom of the same thing that can lead to prostate cancer, high hormone levels. This is the same thing that leads to the protective effect later on, so it’s really just two sides of the same coin. A lot of this seems preliminary, however.

Is it necessary? I don’t believe so but would be interested in hearing the reasoning from those who think it is.

Is it normal? Yes.

It is a great stress reliever and is good for a person in moderation. I said person because that means men and women alike.

Not if you have chocolate.

If you mean jerking off, no.
A guy who had to unload could always have a wet dream.
Nature takes care of itself.
One doesn’t have to [although one could, to relieve stress, or to be rude] burp or fart deliberately.

That sounds like a myth believed by Alexander Portnoy.

Why would a guy or a girl not masturbate? Doesn’t it feel fucking good. Then do it. Although I have never masturbated in my life. I have to stay a virgin. Pfffttt

I personally never had any interest in myself. It was the Other who made it enjoyable.

I have heard (read in the newspaper) that ejaculation helps the prostate and is a good preventative for prostate cancer. It was a respected enough study that it even resulted in jokes, “don’t mind me, I am going to go help myself prevent prostate cancer” or “Baby, we may not be getting along but you could at least help me keep from getting cancer.”

I was lucky and had regular sex all my life. I still ended up with prostate cancer. One of the first things the doctors tell you after treatment is “use it or lose it.” You need to keep the blood flowing into the tissues to promote healing and keep the parts working. We are strongly encouraged to engage in amorous activities like Al Capone voted: early and often.

You are not recovering from surgery but the lesson is still valid. If you don’t take care of it yourself at the very minimum nocturnal emissions (wet dreams) will keep your pipes open and the fuel somewhat fresh. Would you rather be in control of where and when it happens or leave it up to chance?

Use it or lose it, pal. You won’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.

I believe it’s healthy to masturbate but I don’t believe that you’ll get sick if you don’t. Some people have very little or no sex drive, they would feel no need to masturbate. The point about women needing to masturbate less is down to libido again – the libido is fuelled by testosterone and women naturally have much less of that than men do. That’s why men generally tend to have a higher sex drive and are more inclined to masturbate regularly.

@Mariah That’s what I wondered though. Because if the body has a natural way of releasing semen via nocturnal emissions if the guy hardly has sex or masturbates, doesn’t that imply that there would be a harmful effect if the body never gets to release semen?

I figured asexual people would be somewhat biologically/chemically different and would be exempt from the need to release.
