Why are my limbs so itchy?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) August 12th, 2013 from iPhone

It has been four days and my legs and arms have been so itchy. There’s no rash or anything but of course when I scratch red dots appears and it looks irritated.

I haven’t used anything new or eat anything different…no different soap, detergent, etc. no clue what it could be…it’s so annoying and anti-itch creams don’t help. It’s just my arms and legs.

I was thinking maybe hear rash but it hasn’t been as hot as it has been the last month. Any ideas?? I did have eczema as a kid but it was dry flaky and patchy…. Of course if it lasts a week I’m seeing a dermatologist…

I had blood work done not too long ago and things were normal.

Been outside and near poison ivy?

Do you have pets who might have fleas?

Bed bugs?

Itchiness can be caused by anything from medication to nerves to little bites. Or as you said eczema. Have you suffered with hives before? It is hot to the touch once you scratch? Is there streaks of blood now and then?

It started itching Thursday but since I been back from a weekend get away at my bf’s stepdad’s farm I think maybe the water or country got to me cuz it itched even more. I been there before and no issue.

It’s hot to touch once scratched I can feel the heat but could be friction from scratching. I have dots that are red after I scratch

Could be stress.

No new meds right?

Has it been cold? Have you used the heater?

It could be fungus. Does it itch more on the inside of your joints, such as the back side of your knees or inside of your elbows? These are places where you sweat more, and it’s a great place for fungus to grow. Or it could be a lot of other stuff.

I am just getting over a raging fungus infection. I showed my doctor (because I was there anyway), and he immediately wanted to write me a prescription. Being the alternative oriented person that I am, I determined to conquer it without the script, and I have done so. My secret? Vinegar. I soaked the most affected areas in a tub of undiluted white vinegar several times a day for about 20 minutes each time. It stung, but it took away the itch for hours at a time, When it dried, I used 1% cortisone cream (to reduce swelling, and extend the itch relief) and a broad spectrum over the counter antifungal cream. Now, only a few days later I’m almost completely healed, and far faster than my doctor said I’d be. Yaaay!

I forgot to mention that vinegar is a very effective remedy against fungus. It flat out kills it.

It’s also best for killing mold and mildew in the home, much better than bleach.

How’s the chlorine in the water? If there is a lot of it in your shower or bath water it can cause a mild burn and that behaves just as you describe.

Were you out in the sun recently?

chelle21689's avatar

No, not fungus, it’s not in any area where sweat would build up. If it were water, detergent, or something like that then I figured my whole body would be itchy and not just my arms and legs so it could be an exposure to something….
@Seaofclouds, I’ve been outside past two days but it’s been cloudy.
So annoying. Thanks for the responses.

Even in cloudy weather you can get sun. It’s possible that you got a mild sunburn and your skin is itching from that.

My guess would be stress. It seems as you’ve had more than your fair share lately, with your job search and everything.

chelle21689's avatar

I don’t think it’s stress because I’ve stressed out big time a few months ago but no itchy skin

gailcalled's avatar

Did you check poison ivy? Were you outside in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt?

chelle21689's avatar

I suspect I may have developed sun rash…itching started to subside after a week but when I went outside to the pool, several hours later my limbs and chest were itchy again! Couple weeks ago when I was outside fishing my limbs were itchy several hours later.

but I don’t have the looks of sun rash. I’m just itchy.

JLeslie's avatar

Were you in ocean water? Is there sea lice there? That will make you itch like crazy! But, usually the itch is where your bathing suit is.

chelle21689's avatar

No I was at a water park. When I went fishing it was a private pond

JLeslie's avatar

Is the itching going away?

Could it have been a new suntan lotion?

chelle21689's avatar

Omg! I just undressed and my legs are covered in patches of red dots that are flat!!! Time to make an appt I’m freaked

JLeslie's avatar

Don’t be freaked. Have you had chicken pox? Athough, chicken pox usually starts onnthe chest I think, but that can vary.

How large are the dots?

Make a doctor’s appointment tomorrow.

JLeslie's avatar

If you push a glass against the rash does it go white? Or, you can still see the rash? Through the glass.

I remember going swimming in a pond where there were ducks. I ended up at a doctor’s office with itching everywhere, and the doc said that there was a parasite that crossed over from the ducks to the snails in the pond, and from there to me. The rash/itching would leave in a few days, and it did. In the meantime, calamine lotion, antihistamine, etc.
