I have the same vision (-8.50 in both eyes) and have been worked up for Lasik, and I am eligible. I've asked everyone I know who's had it, including Opthamologists, what their opinion is, to see if I should invest in it. So far, it's come down to mostly good, but some bad. Pros - it's incredibly fast and easy with quick recovery. They've done it so much now they have Lasik, down and competition has driven down costs. Those who have had great experiences, love the results and freedom they have. The other group has complained about "ghosting" or double images created by a miniscule wrinkle in the flap, and dry eyes, as well as the need to go in and have it done a second time. Plus, as time goes on, they're going to need reading glasses anyway.

Because there's really no urgency for me to get this done right away, I'm still going to hold out for a few more years and see if an even more refined procedure comes along. These are my eyes and until the gold standard, hands-down is in place and working perfectly, I'm going to wait. But that's just me : )

I'd be interested to hear what other people have to say as well.

Everyone I've talked to has had a good experience. I, perhaps incorrectly, am apprehensive about correcting my bad myopia with Lasik as I have a family history of other eye problems, including (help me out here, I can't remember the term for excessively high pressure in the eye) which part of me thinks would be aggravated by the Lasik thinning of the eye surface. Glaucoma, that's the term I was trying to remember.

I don't know as to whether you are specifically eligible but the surgery truly did change my life. Occasionally my eyes get a little dryer in the morning than they used to but I just put in a drop of solution in the morning and I'm good to go all day. That said, there are a lot of people who offer really cheap versions of this surgery but this is not something I would skimp on to save a few hundred bucks. Some shady people offer LASIK and you don't want those people messing with your corneas.
