Why has noone done this yet?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) August 18th, 2013

It seems obvious to me, why hasn’t any company made a washing machine/dryer with a wireless gadget that lets you know when the job is done, I’m sure many people have them in a basement and probably won’t hear the alarm so why not have a little wirelss one too?

If this has not been invented yet, you should invent it!

We know how long it takes, more or less half an hour for the washer, and however many min. we chose for the dryer. I think it wouldn’t sell much.

@chyna Eh, I don’t have the resources too.

I’m pretty sure they exist. I recall Consumer Reports mentioning it in their recent ratings. I think LG and Samsung have it.

You may have just given away your life changing invention!

I just set my low tech, wind-up kitchen timer. High tech folks can set an alarm on their smart phones. No need for the invention you are talking about.

Two and a half men made a joke about it 2 years ago..

I loathe my washing machine “I’m finished! ” alarm, I can hear it beeping from the other end of the house, I can’t stand machines that insist on telling you things, people are quite capable of going to the laundry to see if the machine is finished, householders existed quite happily before the onset of these alarms. If anyone knows how to throttle the alarm by disengaging it, please do share how.

@jaytkay Lol, well I don’t feel like making a washing machine from scratch XD

A product called twine was launched on kickstarter to allow folks to set up different sensors for different events and then get a notice however they like.

The kickstarter page

It’s available now, from Supermechanical, they have more info on the site as well.

A review.

Sharing here first because it’s cool but also shows (as @jaytkay points out) you don’t necessarily need the resources to manufacture a million of them to get started.

I saw a washer/dryer combo that has a smartphone app.
I’m not sure how useful that would be really seeing as you have to physically put your clothing in both machines.

I did a quick Web search for appliance monitors. Here is one from GE.

It seems to me that there should be a way of wiring together everything in the house. You should be able to turn lights off and on and you should be able, if the mood strikes you, to route telephone calls to your radio. More practically, you should be able to use the same device to set up recording from any television or radio.

do you mean the beeping sounds both my washer and dryer give off when they’re done?

XOIIO's avatar

@LostInParadise We are getting there, there are already plenty of DIY home automation systems that combine a whackload of features, everything from individual lights to sprinkler timers.

We’re bound to progress in that direction even more.

@Aster @XOIIO is referring to the common washers & dryers in the basement of apartments.

What I would like someont to invent an alarm for when there is a leak, the fridge/freezer stops working anything unexpected like that. Probably it is out there.

I just came across this article, carrying your idea to its ultimate, or perhaps beyond its ultimate, conclusion.
