What should I do for my psychology project?

Asked by Mtrencher (187points) August 19th, 2013

I am taking AP Psychology this year and we will be doing a year long project. What are some good project ideas that I can do? Some examples that my teacher gave were:
Why do we do the things we do?
How do others affect us?
How can human attraction be explained?
How can teachers motivate students?
How can I motivate myself?
How do early experiences affect personality?
Are humans more influenced by heredity or environment?
Why do I forget what I want to remember and remember what I
want to forget?
What is the function of dreams?

How do people experience their status as individuals belonging to marginalized communities? What is the felt experiences of race? How do high school students perceive gender difference?

Dreams are always fun and you may have the opportunity to teach your friends the reality of what a dream is and is not.

I’m thinking of doing something related to music, because that is my passion. But I can’t quite figure out a spin to it that makes this my project.

@Mtrencher What makes something mainstream or ‘new’ music? How are music preferences related to culture?

If you want something music related, you could look into the so-called Mozart effect.

” Are humans more influenced by heredity or environment? ”

Only in psychology!!

Educated people know that this is a false dichotomy and not even measurable. ( studies show the variance, difference, in influence here, not the amount of influence )

So, show that for your project and show that there is no dichotomy here. It is nature via nurture.

Look into Music Psychology if music is your thing.

Why don’t you try to see if there is a link to what intelligent a child aspire to when listening to different music birth to toddler, IE, heavy metal, rock, classical, jazz, country, etc? Do children who listen to classical as babies really gain an edge over the children expose to heavy metal? Why not try to find that out?

In The Mourning Bride, William Congreve says, “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast.” source

There are some interesting studies of how babies in utero respond to both music and the human voice. http://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20130102/babies-learn-womb

@gailcalled I don’t think most people know the context in which breast is used within the poem. The popular misquote is understood.

Beyond dreams, look into the function of sleep. I heard a fascinating radio interview with a neurosurgeon about some of her work and the work of others in this area. The experimental evidence suggests that during sleep the brain does a lot of work in solidifying memories. Dreaming may just be a side effect of this activity.
