How jaded would you say you've become over the years?

Asked by jordym84 (4752points) August 28th, 2013

This question is in light of what happened at the VMAs – I never watch them, but I’ve been reading a lot of what happened on my Facebook newsfeed and in news sites. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up the much-talked-about performance by Miley Cyrus. Although I can see why it’s causing so much drama, I was neither shocked nor impressed by it. Clearly, Ms. Cyrus has had a lot going for herself and has probably accomplished a lot in her short life, thanks to her financial wealth, which makes me think that she’s probably bored with her life and will seize every opportunity that presents itself to her to cause a scene and attract attention (good and bad).

I would say that her performance was no different than those of her predecessors’ (Madonna, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga come to mind), although it can be argued that her age and fanbase (impressionable tweens/teens) are important considerations.

So, do you find this (or any other pop culture antic) shocking? Or do you simply dismiss it as just another blip on the radar?

I really, seriously, honestly don’t give a shit.

I have friends who get on stage and bust televisions over their own heads. That is much more entertaining than some teenager shaking her skinny ass.

I think Miley is an inspiration.

After her performance I’ve decided to start my own twerk team. I too can’t dance, and lack much to twerk. <shakes it><drops it><lets it simmer>

If you’d like to book me and my squad, I’ll be in my dressing room.

@Seek_Kolinahr – we’re accepting members. First Vulcan twerker has a nice ring to it, it’s only logical to shake what your mekina gave you

<———Less jaded. More cynical.

Nothing surprises me anymore, humans vary so much. Hollyweird is a whole…notha…level.

I wouldn’t call myself jaded. It’s more like each year at things like the VMA must be more outrageous than the year before. Miley Cyrus didn’t get naked, she just did what has been done by a lot of people, but put it all together in one package.

And, quite frankly, I think a lot of the reaction has been because she is young and white. Nobody would think twice if Li’l Kim or Nicki Minaj did the same thing.

When it comes to crap like that, I’m cynical/jaded. I didn’t watch the VMA’s but learned enough about it from social media like FB, that without even seeing it, I have an idea of what happened. I remember when Janet Jackson bared her tit at the Super Bowl and at that time, I felt like it was a publicity stunt. Not impressive, but these things seem to achieve the desired effects, which is more publicity. I think if we ignore this crap, it will cease to exist. Unfortunately, people don’t ignore it and it continues.

I watched to see what all the fuss was and I was more inclined to yawn than anything else. It wasn’t sexy, it was an immature kid trying to push someone’s buttons. Class is sexy. That wasn’t classy at all. Yeah, I’m either jaded or cynical, or maybe I’ve just grown up.

I am not jaded, but I do not care about tempests is a teapot like that one.

Over the years I have become much more jaded. It pains me to see that my response to things like what is happening in Syria has become both cynical and yet uncaring. Does the fact that it bothers me that I feel that way mean I am not as jaded as I believe I am or is it just a self-defense mechanism I employ to stay sane?

As for things like the VMA’s I never really gave a crap about rich, bored, self-absorbed celebrities and their “look-at-me” antics even when I was younger so in that respect, I have not changed over the years.

Extremely Relevant article from The Onion. Oh, if only all “News” agencies could be this honest!

About as much as the next person. Something occurred with a person named Miley Cyrus? Who is she?

@Bluefreedom Some pop star who spreads her legs a lot.

I’m so fucking jaded. Like a disgruntled samurai roaming the country side. I trust no one. I’m a lone wolf.

Joking bro. Probably kinda jaded, but maybe not that much. Actually, seems to me that I was a lot more ’‘jaded’’ when I was younger. But that was probably something else. Not everything in the world is cool by far, but I can find and appreciate all the good shit I come across, and it counts for me.

And I’m not a samurai, I’m a Viking. One who still has passion for plundering, setting shit on fire and being epic, even when I just stand there, doing nothing.

Let the plundering begin. Hail to Queen S!
