What's your favourite bridge movie/book/song?

Asked by ucme (50047points) September 2nd, 2013

Loads of war films to pick from, more than a few books & a handful of songs, so go on then…bridge the gap!

Bridge Over the River Kwai. Good book, good movie, good whistle…

Mike Bloomfield’s & Al Kooper’s cover of The 59th St. Bridge Song.

I vote for the “Bridges of Madison County” movie theme. Gorgeous and so evocative.

My favorite ones are poems. To Brooklyn Bridge by Hart Crane, and it’s predecessor, Crossing Brooklyn Ferry by Walt Whitman.

Mr, and Mrs. Bridges. Two of our most regarded stars, Joan Woodward and Paul Newman.

My all time favourite Red Hot Chillis song

Other than what @downtide said, the only other bridge song I can think of is “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. It’s a pretty good song.

Hebrew song: Gesher Tzar Meod (“Very Narrow Bridge”). The main lyrics are translated as “The whole world is a very narrow bridge and the main thing is not to be afraid.” – Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.

Here’s another: Kim Wilde Actually this one came to mind first, but I like the Chillis better.

Boy, am I glad no one mentioned “Ode To Billy Joe”
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Bridge Over the River Kwai
The Bridges of Madison County

And my favorite Bridge actor is Jeff Bridges.

The Bridge A 10-part Danish TV series, thriller, murder, police, wonderful stuff.

Glad no one mentioned Beau Bridges, although to be fair to the man Two Minute Warning was a decent film. I placed River Kwai in my topics to indicate my fave bridge movie, but for reasons unknown it was removed.

Here’s a movie I made this morning on the new Bay Bridge!

Unfortunately, my camera ran out of room…

Bridge Over Troubled Waters – S&G (song), or Bridges of Madison County (book.)

@answerjill: Anyone who quotes Rabbi Nachman is automatically my friend.

No one, I don’t think, has mentioned Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge,

Or the 1977 war movie A Bridge Too Far

Or Thornton Wilder’s interesting novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey.

@filmfann That song’s really catchy.

“No one, I don’t think, has mentioned…”
Perhaps if you’d chosen to earlier rather than opting for sarcasm.

gailcalled's avatar

I was writing a straightforward statement. I had no intention of being sarcastic.

__chosen to earlier?_

ucme's avatar

Your first answer tickled me, as I anticipated someone coming up with the card version of bridge.
Sarcasm as opposed to your latest post, all fine examples by the way.

gailcalled's avatar

I never use sarcasm, only irony. But I get your point. My high school Engiish teacher had us read “The Bridge of San Luis Rey”(written in 1927) and write a long paper about it. Probably it’s never been required reading anywhere since.

ucme's avatar

Yeah, irony seems to be a more accurate description, not that I was bothered in any way, just pointing out that your subsequent offering was a more worthy effort.

Don’t forget about Bridge Mix

Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower should get a mention somewhere.
