What is the funniest movie you have ever seen?

Asked by naynay86 (944points) September 4th, 2013

I am really bored and am in the mood to laugh, any suggestions on a really funny movie to watch? I feel like I haven’t seen a movie where I just cracked up the entire time in a long time, it’s long overdue!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, if you haven’t seen it for some weird reason…
Or Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul, and The Worlds End…

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

My first thought was Airplane… and then I found this. Always nice to find people agreeing with me.

Might seem a little dated so many years later, but still funny.

My s/o says anything with Dudley Moore, Johnny Dangerous, Weekend at Bernies.

A Night at the Opera

I’d vote for Blazing Saddles, History of the World, or Spaceballs

I would also highly recommend the original (British) version of Death at a Funeral.

Funniest? I could never choose. Here are some of my favorites…

The Hangover 1 and 2
Easy A
Due Date
Office Space
Knocked Up
Superbad
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle
40 Year Old Virgin
Horrible Bosses
Wedding Crashers
Waiting
Get Him to the Greek
I Love You Man
Just Go With It

When I really need a laugh, though, I like to turn to stand-up comedy.

Louis CK
Katt Williams
Dave Chapelle
Nick Swardson
Daniel Tosh
Ron White

There’s Something About Mary
Borat
Team America, World Police

Anything Monty Python or Mel Brooks.

Not a movie, but if you can get your hands on A Bit of Fry And Laurie you will not be disappointed.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr Don’t know if it still is but A Bit of Fry and Laurie used to be on netflix instant view

zenzen's avatar

Stripes. Coming to America. Ace Ventura. The latest Star Trek movie, but that was more of a “ha”.

jordym84's avatar

The Hangover (the original one) and Bridesmaids. I’ve watched them both countless times and they still never fail to make me laugh.

ucme's avatar

Monty Python
Blazing Saddles
Stir Crazy
The Sunshine Boys
The Three Stooges
Laurel & Hardy
Ace Ventura
Borat
Cannonball Run

I could go on forever, but I won’t.
Fry & Laurie were hilarious, soupy twist :)

Funniest modern movie for me is Shaun of the Dead.

“Don’t forget to kill Phillip”. Laughed so hard during that whole abduct mom/plan-to-kill-Phillip scene.

Funniest movie of all time would be a tie between Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.

“The sheriff is near!”

Seek's avatar

@ucme“Damn, damn double damn and a side order of damn!”

SABOTEUR's avatar

Not a fair question!

Heck…hard to pick one movie and call it the funniest; but if I had to pick one, the first movie that comes to mind is Next Friday.

ucme's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr They were bang on with their comedy, Fry was/is so funny.
Loved him in Blackadder too.

Katniss's avatar

@SABOTEUR Anything starting Ice Cube is awesome.

Katniss's avatar

@ucme What IS Blackadder? My son is always going on and on about it.

ucme's avatar

@Katniss It was a comedy show spanning four series starring Rowan Atkinson as the evil, cunning, stoopid Blackadder. Along with Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Tony Robinson, Miranda Richardson, Robbie Coltrane & Rik Mayall also appeared over the course of those episodes.

One that hasn’t been listed yet is The Gods Must Be Crazy.

My favorite two from the past decade are Anchorman and Tropic Thunder.

“Texas Across The River”

jaytkay's avatar

Wait, I forgot Dr. Strangelove!

YARNLADY's avatar

The Princess Bride

filmfann's avatar

The original “The Producers”.
Woody Allen’s “Everything you ever wanted to know about sex (but were afraid to ask)”
“Uncle Buck”

FutureMemory's avatar

@jonsblond Robert Downey Jr’s performance in Tropic Thunder was just priceless.

What do you mean, you people?

Kardamom's avatar

As of today, I’m going to say Despicable Me Part 2. Almost wet myself.

A slightly older movie, would be Young Frankenstein.

Kardamom's avatar

Totally forgot about High Anxiety, also by Mel Brooks. It satirizes and glorifies many of Alfred HItchcock’s films.

rojo's avatar

The Life of Brian. (and the Princess Bride) Shaun of the Dead was good too and so was Juno although i don’t think I would put that into the “funny” category. But, don’t get me wrong, it was an excellent movie, just not a laugh-out- loud-piss-your-pants comedy.

jordym84's avatar

I forgot to mention Groundhog Day.

Ned: Ned… Ryerson. “Needlenose Ned”? “Ned the Head”? C’mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn’t graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?
Phil: Ned Ryerson?
Ned: Bing!
Phil: Bing.

Love it!

How about the Scary Movie movies?
Vampires Suck was pretty humorous too.
