What should I have in the house before I pick up my dog?

Asked by janbb (62874points) September 8th, 2013

I’m adopting a 6 – 8 month old Shih tzu – Havanese mix. I am very excited. Will pick him up on Friday afternoon. Planning to get a crate (he is used to one), a harness, a leash, some toys and food. Have food and water bowls from my last dog. Anything I’ve left out?

A dog bed that you want him to use.

How about a longer leash, for letting him run around in case you don’t want him off-leash (yet)? Also, I would get a chewing bone and treats, but you might have included that when you said “food”.

@marinelife If I have the crate with soft things in it or maybe the bed in it, do I need a separate bed?

Before I read the details I was going to say lots of paper towels but hopefully he’s fully potty trained by now. Congratulations!

Puppy training pads!

He is an older pup so I am hoping to train him between the crate and taking him outside. Unfortunately, my usual dog potty route is not functional as I have no deck for him to cross to the yard. I am hoping to bring him down to the dog toilet area frequently.

Are puppy pads useful for older pups or are they just a work-around?

Things to chew on (that aren’t your shoes).

Congrats. very exciting!

Saw the pics on face book. So cute!
Treats are a must to help train him.

Comfy dog bed, dog shampoo and brush, dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste (to take care of his little teefies!), and some Nature’s Miracle (if you have carpet), for doggie accidents.

You don’t need a separate dog bed if you have old pillows or throws around. My pets are more inclined to love a good Sherpa blanket (which we buy on sale off season).

Chews, small training sized treats, you may want a clicker to train with, and his current brand of food (to wean help wean onto what you will feed).

You may want to just look around and put anything up that you don’t want chewed (shoes or slippers, cords, etc).

We do keep puppy pads for rainy days here (and my dogs are all older), but that’s up to you since you’ll be crating.

@janbb It depends on you and your habits. We find pads like these very handy.

Crawl around on your hands and knees where the pup is going to live to get a pup’s eye view of what they will see. You might be surprised to see things you wouldn’t want them to get into.

@marinelife My last question was not about the beds but about the puppy pads that dogs can go on.

@janbb Did you look at the link? It is a dog bed.

@marinelife wee wee pads are the topic at hand. I find them particularly useful in extremely inclement weather.
