What is a good company to work for?

Asked by naynay86 (944points) September 8th, 2013

I am in search of a new job. I am in retail management, its what I know and what I am good at. Any suggestions of a good place to apply that treat their employees well?

I would hit up Wal-Mart for the experience until you find a better job. I mean, I’d never suggest Wal-Mart as a career but it is a good transition type job until you find something decent. Being that you’ll be working, you won’t be in such a panic to find something. I wouldn’t even put them on the resume. I’ve had several jobs that I used that way.

I worked at Wal-Mart before, when my job of 10 years closed. In 4 months, it was the worst job ever! I got my leg cut open when one of their shelves fell down and everything on it and the glass cut through my pants. Got documented for it, cuz somehow that was my fault. I have a job now, but the store is relocating to another town further away. So worse case I will collect unemployment, so I am not worried. I am just casually looking. And I don’t put them on resumes lol

Are you interested in relocating? If not it’s really more about who’s a good employer in your area.

There are usually “top xx places to work” lists for most major metropolitan areas. They aren’t foolproof, but they’re a good place to start and can be found via google pretty easily with a “best places to work in <mytown>”.

I’ve also found sites like glassdoor.com helpful, they will show employee reviews on culture, salary, and even comments on interview style to help you prepare.

Good luck with your search.

As you said you have an idea about retail management so its good if you will join any retail fields like marts, shopping complexes etc. But do it if you have an interest on it. Never do anything , without any interest. All companies & fields are good to work but its depends on your interest & passion towards work

For what it is worth, here is the result of one survey of best retailers to work for.

Is the relocation of the retail outlet because of reduces sales ?
If so, you may want to switch your career path or move. Several large retail and “Big Box” stores have moved out of my county. The unemployment was increasing and sales per store had “tanked” with double digit percent drop in sales.

IKEA and REI are rated best retailers to work for.

Where do you live?

Macy’s is everywhere, so I assume there is one near you. They have become a little out of control with the long hours during Christmas, but otherwise they are ok to work for.

I worked for Bloomingdale’s for many years and I liked it. The high end stores like Saks and Neimans are an easier job physically, better hours.

Costco I have heard is a good company.
