It used to be that plasma was the way to go for sports/action because the response time is very fast.
The LCDs, including with LED backlight, are now a lot faster than they used to be, so for most folks this is a moot issue.

Plasma screens suck up a lot more electricity for the same size, and the colors fade faster than LCD/LED.

Plasma is easier to watch in bright light or outdoors where LCD/LED tend to get overwhelmed by sunlight or very bright room lights.

For most normal sports-watching situations I’d pick an LED-backlit LCD TV.
(The LCD TVs that are not LED-backlit have fluorescent backlights. Those use less power than plasma but about double what an LED set will use. IMHO the only reason to get a non-LED LCD TV these days is if it’s on deep discount.)

@dabbler go with 1080i or 1080p?

These days there’s no excuse for a big TV (>40”) to Not be 1080p.
Definitely get 1080p.
