Is there a way to upload my videos faster?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) September 16th, 2013

I know I asked this not long ago, but I can’t find the question anywhere. I have a video I’m trying to load on FB and on Youtube. Both of them look like they’re literally going to take hours to upload.

What can I do? (I’ll book mark this this time. I promise!)

what is your measured upload speed and your uplink speed as promised by your ISP?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Are you on dial-up?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t know @ragingloli.

I think so…I’m with Cox @Tropical_Willie.

ragingloli's avatar

well, find out then.

Dutchess_III's avatar

How do I do that?

Rarebear's avatar

Are you hard wired into your internet or are you on wireless?
You can measure your speed at speedtest.net

ragingloli's avatar

surely your isp has sent you documents, contract, and username/password for your connection?
You could also call them and ask.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Not wireless @Rarebear. Thanks for the link.

Rarebear's avatar

What are your results?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Check with Cox for the “UPLOAD” speed. My cable company just offered me an upgrade to 2 Mbs for a buck a month from 1Mbs. It is consistently 2.1 Mbs now.

jerv's avatar

When I signed up with my ISP, I was promised up to 7Mbps download and 768Kbps upload. It said so right in the paperwork. So it’s possible to know even before hooking up a computer.

Speedtest.net is a good way to verify that you’re getting what you’re paying for though, and unlike cable, I actually get >95% of the speed I am promised while many of my cable-connected friends are finding out with “up to” really means.

Regardless of what your contract says, Speedtest.net will probably tell you why things are taking so long.

johnpowell's avatar

Video is huge and most upload speeds are shit. My point and shoot camera makes files that are like 100Megs per minute. It takes me a hour to upload that on my 50 dollar a month internet connection. Suck my dick CenturyLink!

My suggestion is to run the video through something like Handbrake and convert it to mp4 before uploading. You will most likely get a smaller file size and as a result a faster upload.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Made an account but it’s “pending activation.” Thanks.

Rarebear's avatar

You don’t need an account for speedtest. You just push the button.

Dutchess_III's avatar

K. Checking. That will be good because my account was denied because I didn’t pass their Spam test.

Rarebear's avatar

Just go to speedtest.net and click the “begin test” button

Dutchess_III's avatar

K says PING 250 MS
Download speed 1.07 Mbs
Upload speed .23 Mbs.

And that means what?

Rarebear's avatar

That is very very very slow.
You should be about 20 times faster. That is dial up speed. Call your Internet provider.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They’ll just say, “Oh, we can upgrade you and make you 500 times faster for only $19.99 a month extra!”

Tropical_Willie's avatar

That is 1990’s dial-up speed. ( Not really but. . . ) There is a BIG problem with the Inter-Web at your ranch.
If you are paying for 5Mbs download and 1Mbs upload, they owe you money. Talk only with Technical not sales.

Rarebear's avatar

Agree. There is something wrong with your cable.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I will @Tropical_Willie. But it’s Cox. They just suck all the way around.

I’ll call them in a second.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They’re saying the speeds are what I’m paying for.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Cox Internet Essentials is 5 Mbs download and 1 Mbs upload. My math is different than theirs.
Did you talk to technical services or sales?
So is there a technical problem? Ask technical if your cable modem is current.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I talked to technical service. She said I have the starter package at 1 Mb. They’re also sending out a tech to look things over.

ragingloli's avatar

how much are you paying for that?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Too fucking much. I did have Cox cable and we were paying a total of $99 for both, but we cancelled the cable. I haven’t gotten my first internet-only bill, but I think it’s $39.99. Apparently there are no other internet providers in this area.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Sorry for the language. It just pisses me off that they charge you through the nose and give crappy service trying to FORCE you to upgrade to a package that probably doesn’t actually cost the company any extra to provide. I’d drop Cox in a heartbeat if I could.

ragingloli's avatar

what a ripoff

ragingloli's avatar

I just looked up what my provider would give me for 40$, or about 30€.
A 16mbit flatrate, plus phone land line.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Dutchess_III If you are paying more than $33.99 (Discount from $44.99), you should be getting the 5Mbs and 1Mbs I mentioned above.

Rarebear's avatar

I just checked for her area in Kansas
https://store.cox.com/residential-store/shop.cox?hsi=w

For her service she should be paying $29.99, not $39.99
The next step up is $42.99

I’m not a Comcast fan (I have it because besides satellite it’s the only game in town) but you might price them out. Then go back to Cox and say, “Comcast can give me such and such. Match it or I bail.”

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thank you guys. I’ll look into it tomorrow.

jerv's avatar

You have 1Mbps down, 256Kbps up, rounded off. I had that as the lowest-tier DSL for a while, and was only paying $25/month for it. It sure beat the 28.8k dial-up I had out in rural NH where the only other option was satellite. Still, unless you live way out in the sticks like I did, you generally have DSL and cable going head-to-head; places that don’t have both usually have neither.

@ragingloli Broadband access in the US is far slower and more expensive than in more civilized places like much of Asia and Europe. Not directly comparable.

Rarebear's avatar

@jerv She doesn’t live in the sticks, though. She lives in a relatively large town in Kansas. She has options.

jerv's avatar

@Rarebear That was my point. She said, “Apparently there are no other internet providers in this area.”, and you have pretty much backed me up that that there are alternatives. Sorry if there was a misunderstanding…

Rarebear's avatar

No, I’m just tired. You were clear.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, AT&T doesn’t provide service, at least not to my house. I’ll check with comcast.

Dutchess_III's avatar

OK, well, I was wrong. The starter package is $29.99 but I’m getting a discount (probably because I cancelled my cable service with them!) so I’m only paying $23.99 for now. I haven’t seen a bill, but I guess I actually have a credit from the cable I cancelled, and also a deposit of $40 because customers who hit the 10 year mark get that deposit credited back. So I have a total credit of $51.24 so I’m good.

A tech is supposed to be coming in today to check all my connections.

Amazing how nice they get when they think they’re going to lose you.

jerv's avatar

Well, $24 for 1M/256K is about right.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I wonder if it’s my camera too. I had an Olympus and I was able to upload video within 10, 15 minutes. Not so with the first video I recently took with my Canon. We’re talking HOURS, a whole day. I set it uploading onto photobucket. Left it overnight. Got a message the next day that the upload had failed.

ragingloli's avatar

If that is what your contract gives you there are only two solutions:
1. Resize/Compress the video to a very small size. That will completely obliterate the quality though.
2. Order a faster connection from your provider. That will cost more.

ragingloli's avatar

Also, what is the file size of the video you tried to upload?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

WAIT WAIT WAIT ! ! You are downloading from Camera through the Computer to the Inter-Web? Why not camera to hard drive and then to Inter-Web from computer?

Dutchess_III's avatar

No..I downloaded it to my hardrive first @Tropical_Willie.

There is a 3rd solution…I wait! I’m downloading the video in question to FB now. I started about 2 hours ago. It is now at….21%.

The size is 757 MB.

ragingloli's avatar

that will take hours. by my calculations, at an upload speed of 32kb/s, about 7 hours total.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s about right. Cox is here now looking at stuff.

ragingloli's avatar

You really need to reduce the file size before you try to upload a video. especially with your rubbish connection

Rarebear's avatar

Agree with @ragingloli.
After all of this drama, we absolutely have to see the video.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Rarebear Hear hear. But I think it will be the weekend before we see it. ;>)

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! It’s the twins! I’ll post it if you want tho!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Cox guy managed to disrupt my video upload on fb, so starting over. It’s is now 2:58. Maybe you’ll be able to see in it 7 or 8 hours!

ragingloli's avatar

twins… is that a euphemism?

ragingloli's avatar

also: “Cox guy managed to disrupt my video upload on fb”
What a dick.
I could not resist

jerv's avatar

This is why I check my resolution before uploading. A 1600×1200 image/video takes four times as much space (2 times 2) as one that’s 800×600. Odds are that your new camera shoots at higher resolution, which leads to far larger files.

Dutchess_III's avatar

No. It’s two babies. Fraternal twins. 8 months old. Boy and a girl. They don’t match at all.

Dutchess_III's avatar

OK, how do I resize it?

ragingloli's avatar

You could try this program
just drop the file in, and click on the wizard staff to go to the conversion settings, where you can set the target resolution, among other things.

Rarebear's avatar

On youtube there is also an option I think to upload videos at various quality. I’m not sure about Facebook.

ragingloli's avatar

@Rarebear
Yeah, Youtube can create lower resolution versions of an uploaded video, but you still have to upload the full size, which does nothing to help in this situation.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I chose 800 X 600 (I think) and MP4 because @ragingloli said something about MP4. I wish one of you were here!

What is hot spot shield?

ragingloli's avatar

I did not say anything about mp4.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ok, I did a test one, and that was OK. Now I’m converting a copy of the one I want.
I hate downloading programs. I always end up with a bunch of other crap that I don’t know what it is and it kind of worries me.

@ragingloli Sorry…@johnpowell did. I knew SOMEBODY did, anyway! All you jellies look alike, you know.

ragingloli's avatar

Also, I would recommend selecting h264 baseline in the video codec dropdown list.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Uploading to photbucket failed, but it failed really really quick!! Trying other formats.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t see a codec drop down list.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Trying it in MVI format.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I can play it on my computer, but it won’t upload to photobucket.

ragingloli's avatar

Oh sorry, I thought you were using the program I linked to.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am Raggie. At least I think I am. I clicked on your link to get to it.
Here are my options: One
Two

ragingloli's avatar

You need to click on the wizard wand to get to advanced options.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Thanks…found the settings you mentioned in there…some wizard. You have to tell it what to do! Just like a husband.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Trying again…JUST COME TO MY HOUSE @ragingloli!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Uploading. Very, very slowly.

ragingloli's avatar

what’s the filesize of the new file?

ragingloli's avatar

Down from 757. It certainly will not take as long as before ^__^

Dutchess_III's avatar

Nope! :) It’s bout 4/5ths done!

Dutchess_III's avatar

SUCESS!!!

3 minutes of video of Some Body Else’s Kid! Gotta love it!

a couple of weeks ago I told Corrie (Mom) that Kale looks like a paraplegic. Corrie said, “No he doesn’t!”
“Yes. Yes he does.”
A moment later I yelled, “Lieutenant Dan! Look out for that chair Lieutenant Dan!”
“MOM! Shut up!”
LOLL!

I called the utility company the next day to pay the bill. The lady said, “This is Corrie’s Mom, right?”
I said, “Uh, yeah…?”
She said “Corrie was in with the twins yesterday and she said you’re calling Kale Lieutenant Dan!”
“Well! He looks like a paraplegic!” The whole office just laughed and laughed.

In this video he does The Hoff pose too….

Savannah coos, Kale grunts like everything he does is SO HARD! You know how guys are. ;)

Rarebear's avatar

Now if you were a real grandmother you would have closed the door to the closet when they crawled into it.

ragingloli's avatar

with them inside, of course

Rarebear's avatar

of course

Dutchess_III's avatar

Of course :)

What closet, btw? I don’t see know stinkin’ closet.

Rarebear's avatar

My bad. It looks like a laundry room not a closet.

Dutchess_III's avatar

IT’S A KITCHEN YA DING DONG!! Geez. I can see you doing an appendectomy…“Oops! My bad! I better try and put that spleen back!” What is with my spelling….“know” closet”?

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL!
It was weird how they seemed disappeared into the dark like they were going through a nebulous curtain, or some sort of cosmic warp…NOO!!! DON’T GO TO THE DARK SIDE!! That was just an illusion because there was, actually, plenty of light. But it was still a cool illusion.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m baaack! I had a video production place transfer some VHS tape of my kids from 1987 to DVD. Would like to post it, but it’s too big. I converted it. What I ended up with was just the sound, but no picture…there was an icon of a big, fat, blue musical note in place of the video.

Wassup with that?

Rarebear's avatar

What’s a “VHS”?

Rarebear's avatar

@Dutchess_III What software did you use to convert it?

Dutchess_III's avatar

VHS…tape?
I used the site that Raggie linked me to above, here.

Rarebear's avatar

@Dutchess_III @ragingloli There may be some sort of video codec you’re missing, or for some reason it’s not reading the video. Often in these video conversions two files are created, one audio and one video. It could be that you’re just reading the audio.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Argh. I wish I knew what all the coding meant. Maybe I should edjacate myself.

Rarebear's avatar

You want to ejaculate yourself?

Dutchess_III's avatar

That…I…um…no?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ah! I have another video I’m trying to compress, but I don’t know which numbers to pick in the wizard!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

format: avi
in the big dropdown field you can select HD ready, or anything below that, then you click on the magic wand, and in the video codec drop down, select h264 baseline.

Dutchess_III's avatar

5mbts
Resolution Width / Heighth down to 512 320 down to 16.2 mb.
I also changed the format to MOV because AVI was saving it as a music file.

AND WE HAVE LIFT OFF!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I liked this thread!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Trying it again. It keeps wanting to save it as a movie file….working on that now (I’m just making notes for myself, guys.)

Dutchess_III's avatar

HELP! What am I doing wrong? Loli?

Dutchess_III's avatar

It keeps wanting to save it as a music file only, no video.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I got it.

Changed the quality.
