Need expertise! "How do I go about putting something on ebay or Craigslist?",?

Asked by Pooh54 (1207points) September 20th, 2013

With my sister-in-law’s passing, she had a beautiful set of 12 piece service of Mikasa dinnerware. Most of it hasn’t been unpacked for 17–20 years. All the serving dishes and trays and everything else that would go to a complete set. I don’t know anything about ebay or Craigslist. I believe the pattern is Cezzano, or something liket that, it is like watercolor floral. Really pretty. How do I go about putting something on ebay or Craigslist?

Go on Ebay. They tell you how to do it.
Or you could have a garage sale.
Or you could keep it in the family…

Look on ebay and also just google Mikasa Cezzano and see what comes up in terms of prices to give you an idea what you can get for it.

Contact a China and Porcelain store like Replacements. They sell items from estate sales and other places.

Sell it to Replacements, Ltd. (http://www.replacements.com/webquote/MIKCEZ.htm). This is a very quick and easy approach, although you won’t get much money. Because Replacements, Ltd. is a retailer, it needs to build a generous profit margin into anything that it acquires and resells.

Sell it to someone who deals in estate property. Again, this would be fast and simple, but you wouldn’t get paid much.

Offer it to a consignment shop. If the set sells, you’ll get a percentage of the sales proceeds. If not, the set will be returned to you. Ditto on quick and easy, and you might get more money.

Sell it on eBay. On an item-by-item basis, you’ll likely realize the most money. But, people seldom buy complete sets of china on eBay; they go there to purchase filler and replacement pieces. So, you’ll likely sell a sugar bowl, a serving platter, a couple of dinner plates, etc. one at a time, and with separate packaging and shipping. And, in the end, you’ll be stuck with an incomplete collection of picked-over items.

That pattern really is beautiful. Maybe someone in your family would like to have it? Does your sister-in-law have any children or grandchildren? I now own 3 complete sets of lovely china – my own, my mother’s, and my grandmother’s. Yes, it’s a bit excessive, but that often happens when people want nice, special things to stay within a family. I just use a different set for every holiday or special meal.

Craigslist is good for selling stuff locally, so that you can meet the buyer and collect the cash in person. I’ve had really good luck with it. Go here, click your city on the right-hand column, create an account, and then click on “Post to Classified.” From there you’re walked through the process step by step. It’s really easy, and unlike Ebay, free.

I can understand if you might be nervous trying it, but once you do it, you’ll probably want to use it again.

Like any Internet selling site, you have to be careful of scammers, but in my experience, using Craigslist and dealing with the buyer locally mitigates that possibility.

I wouldn’t set up an Ebay account for just 1 thing… Craigslist is kind of spamy and scamy, I’d just put an add in your local paper. I’ve had luck doing it that way.
