Why on earth would you do something like that?

Asked by DWW25921 (6498points) October 1st, 2013

“I wonder what would happen if I…” stories.

When I was a kid, about 8 or 9, I decided to jump off a loading dock on my bike. Just to see if I could, I guess. I flipped over and landed on my back. A friends mom came rushing over hysterical and all I said was, “I’ll get it right next time.”

You know, stuff like that.

Being impulsive and stupid is something kids are great at. It’s normal for them to take risks because they think they’re invincible.

Why do adults do these things? Hmm…an adrenaline rush? Stupidity? Both?

@livelaughlove21 As an adult… I’ve taken my Ford Explorer down an ATV trail. You ever been to West Virginia? I got lost, thought I was going to wreck, smacked my old ford with rocks and branches… Got out ok though. It was fun… and stupid…

Under the heading of “What was I thinking?”
I was 19 years old, going to Daytona beach with another girl. We stopped in Jacksonville to spend the night at a motel. We went out to the pool and two cute guys were out there.
We were flirting etc. So to show off, I did a perfect dive off of the diving board. I’m so cool. I hit the bottom of the pool. With my face. I broke my nose, blacked both eyes, busted my lips, tore the skin off my face starting at my forehead down to my chin.
I did not knock my teeth out though. Yay!
Guy I was trying to impress left.

@chyna Oh no! That is awful! I’m glad you’re ok now though… How embarrassing!

@DWW25921 Yes, my family is from West Virginia, but we have ATV trails here in South Carolina, too. People here do a lot of stupid things like that. Mud riding, for one. I’ve gone once and the truck almost flipped. Then we got stuck and had to call someone to pull us out of the mud hole. The people we went with want to take the four-wheelers out there next time. No thanks. I’m not country enough for all that.

@livelaughlove21 Ford Explorers are a bit top heavy. I could have died. Good times. :)

@DWW25921 True. We were in a Toyota, so it was pretty light. If not, we would’ve never gotten out of that mud hole.

@chyna Oh jeez, I would have taken care of you. Ouch.

@Adirondackwannabe Thank you. Obviously you are a gentleman and they weren’t. Or I really looked that bad!

He might not have been able to take the sight of blood. Or he might have been a jerk. How deep was the pool?

Pachy's avatar

As a young kid, I once “parachuted” off a second-story balcony using a sheet. The sheet-chute failed to break my fall but somebody waaaaaaaay higher than that balcony must have looked down and decided to save me from breaking my neck.

Testosterone poisoning, usually.

@Adirondackwannabe I think it was 8 feet. I actually hit where the side started coming up from the deep side to the shallow.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

They use to say that was deep enough for diving. But that only gives you a few feet to turn. Lucky you didn’t get hurt worse.
Cautionary lesson to others: Be careful diving. Always.

Didn’t somebody just ask about a week ago what fool things we did as kids that probably should have got us killed? I remember it, but I can’t seem to find it.

Dropping acid and going on a midnight, moonlight white water rafting run on a local river.
Only capsized once, woo hoo! I was a wild child, it was the 70’s, and I bought my own raft at 16. I was quite the little white water babe back in the day.
I did slash my foot open pretty nicely on a sharp rock that night, but the adrenaline made it hardly noticable til the next morning. haha

Old people make laws to stop young people from doing all the wild and wonderful things they did when they were young. If that keeps going 2213 will be a mild and wondering time

@chyna you are so, so lucky. A girl in Britain did just that, into a swimming pool and ended paralyzed from the neck down. Her boyfriend was there too. She said that she knew when she dived it was going to end badly. She died last year.

Oh, at around 9 a friend and I were shooting Pussy Willow buds at each other from our noses.
Nasal pea shooters. haha
I inhaled one of mine and had to have it extracted from my sinuses. Good times.

Tequila and trampolines…really not a good combination.

Hitchhiking from SC to NYC when I was 19…bad idea but worked out OK.

Whitewater rafting on my 50th birthday…very good idea. Found out I have a knack for extreme sports!
