Has a child ever misinterpreted an explanation you have given them to your surprise?

Asked by Sunny2 (18842points) October 8th, 2013

This question is piggybacking on ETpro’s question about answering kids’ questions. Our cat was in heat for the first time. I explained to our 4 year old that we must not let the cat out because she was in heat. (my first error). Next thing I knew he had let the cat out. His explanation: “I know you said not to let the cat out because it was hot out, but she was meowing and wanted to see her friends.” The first friend that cat saw next was the vet. Second error I made was not locking and bolting the front door because there was no way I could explain to a 4 year old what the situation was.

I don’t know if I am surprised, but things I say get misinterpreted all the time. I especially experience it with my inlaws. It just happened with my neice recently and I feel unable to fix it. I’m pretty sure she feels bad by what I said, which makes me feel like crap. I don’t know why I try to help them at all, it never works out. Sometimes I think about writing down all the misunderstanding so when I die they can read them all.

One day a friend announced to his kids that he was quitting drinking coffee and cigarettes because, as he explained, “they are drugs and all dependencies are bad and they make you weak.” His youngest daughter went to school the following week and told her fellow students that her father was quitting drugs. This put the school authorities on alert and the man was investigated by law enforcement and social services under threat of having his children taken away. After much confusion, nothing happened.

I wasn’t the one giving the explanation, but it’s a funny story, so…

My little sister was playing in her room. She and her friend must both have been about five. Suddenly, the talk of “horsies” was interrupted by my sister stating,

“Men were created by apes.”
A pause. Then, her friend agreed…
“Yeah. And first they created Adam and Eve.”
