How long should I wait before requesting a credit line increase on my credit card?

Asked by Emmy1234 (878points) October 12th, 2013

Okay, so I started out pretty rough on my credit score but I’ve been working really hard at cleaning it up. My credit lines are kinda low on my 2 cards ones 900 and ones 2000. I want to increase my credit line so it will help boost my credit score. I am very careful now and pay everything on time and have no debt. How long should I have the card before I request a credit line increase?

I would wait at least 6 months, possibly a year. You don’t want to be turned down for an increase—that would impact your credit score. Be sure to use the card regularly and pay it off on time every month.

I use both and pay them off monthly. The one I’ve had for 5 years and it only has a 900 limit. What’s the deal with that? @Pachyderm_In_The_Room. Should I get rid of it and get a better one?

Based on my past experience with debt , my best advice would be not apply for another card—just stick with the ones you have.

@emmy If you always pay the card on time and your credit score isn’t terrible, I don’t see why they wouldn’t raise your limit if you have had the card years. I think you should call and ask. See what they need to do to raise it. If they have to run your credit, and you have already run your credit more than once this year then hold off, but I think they will just raise it without doing anything special. I’ve never asked for a limit increase so I don’t know exactly what it entails.

You pay it off in full every month? Or, you pay off the minimum payment?

I pay it off in full every month @JLeslie I don’t know why that haven’t increased my $900 credit card. It doesn’t make any sense. The $2000 card Ive only had for 3 months so I’m not asking that to be upped.

@Emmy1234 Then just call them up. I would assume they will raise your limit. When I get credit cards they give me crazy high limits and my credit is in the 700’s.
