What exactly do people do when they're on their iPhones?

Asked by dxs (15160points) October 21st, 2013

Inspired by this question.
So many people I see nowadays are always walking down the street with iPhones, Smartphones, or any handheld device like that. People are constantly focusing their eyes and straining their necks to see what is going on on the tiny little screen. I don’t have one, so I want to know what the hell is going on? Can I know or is it a secret? Are they discovering all of the secrets of the universe? Am I going to turn into “one of them”?
I once observed a group of four friends sitting at a table once in the cafeteria. Nobody was saying anything to each other; all four of them were just messing with their phones.

They have tightly controlled interaction with a world of their choosing, allowing them to breeze through the world that has random and unpredictable unpleasantness.

You can do just about anything on a smartphone that you can do on a desktop computer. We all use them differently based on our interests and needs.

Social networking is a popular mobile activity. Some people play games – of which there is an amazing variety.

You can check and send emails, log-in to the work network, pay bills, deposit checks, etc. You can check the sports scores, read a book, get the latest news, etc.

You can take pictures and edit them to look artsy or alien or goofy, and share them with your friends and social networks. You can listen to music, watch TV or movies, or videos posted by complete strangers of the shenanigans that they or their pets get into.

You can get answers to your questions about what people are doing on their smartphones, or research the odd symptoms you’ve been having, or refresh your memory about what year ‘Dr. No’ was released and who sang the theme song.

I use my iPhone to check email, Google for specific info, check weather and breaking news, and occasionally text. And of course I use it when I need to make a call, but only rarely and never when I’m driving. I also use the map app, which is even better than the GPS I have in my car.

I don’t play games, watch videos or listen to music (I have an iPod for that but don’t even use it very much anymore), or tweet. I got along very nicely before cell phones, but now I feel naked when I don’t have it with me.

Trying to be anywhere but where they are right now. And trying to be anything but alone.

@Katniss Never!
That doesn’t sound that interesting. My Macbook Pro does just fine and isn’t a pain to stare at. I’m already kicking myself for having bought one Mac item, but I won’t fall further into consumerism. Macs are terrible on the environment, among other things.

I have an iPhone, but I mostly just use it to go on Fluther, send a quick text to my mom or boyfriend, and listen to music.

@glacial Or trying to be alone. I use my phone to stop people from approaching me when I’m out alone in the dark – just like a book.
