Suggestions on books about the global energy market?

Asked by Questionsaboutstuff (265points) October 22nd, 2013

So I’m looking for a new book looking at a few things, one being the cost of different energy sources such as coal, gas, etc and their expected supply changes in current years as well as expected demand from new markets.

Also the initial cost to build something like a coal power station or nuclear power station, the changing costs of new power and how much is that cost coming down each year, plus the cost of running these forms of power.

I would recommend The Prize (Daniel Yergin) but that is somewhat dated now and is definitely more pointed at the petroleum industry. Yergin also (more recently) wrote The Quest, which is a couple years old but gives a better overall view of the energy situation.

I’m not aware of any book-length quality assessments of the current energy situation. I would suggest periodical literature—specifically the IEEE Spectrum for a look at the technologies of nuclear and alternative power sources. Also, Foreign Affairs journal for the geo-political situations around energy. You’ll have to some checking on which issue(s) of each to consult, but they are both quality publications.

Lots of good information on www.electricchoice.com and similar sites.

Just remember that new power plants are now coming under the EPA regulations and will be required to install carbon control and measurement systems. New power plants these days will cost a great deal more than those built before. Renovations and overhauls on both new and existing plants will surely make an impact on that.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘changing costs of new power’ but I can assure you that nothing about energy costs is coming down any time soon, but rather steadily climbing. That is, unless we crack the whole Fusion thing. That’ll be another 10 years at least though.
