How do I keep my mind in the present moment?

Asked by Mp123 (317points) October 23rd, 2013

I’ve been trying for a long time to stay focus on the present moment and not think of anything else and I recently succeed for like less than a minute.

Is it me or when you actually are in the present moment it kinda feels like you’re in another world? Kinda like your sense and everything are 10 times more accurate ?

I would like to be able to stay longer than a minute but I can’t even do it while I’m working for example or driving. I only succeed when I was sitting down, relaxed.

Does anyone have a trick on how to stay focus on the present moment without thinking of anything else?

Thank you !

Focus on your breathing only. When you feel your mind drifting away, bring it back to your breathing. Practicing this technique will help you learn to stay in the present.

Thoughts are a feature of the present moment, too, though their contents often aren’t about this moment. When you’re making an effort to stay in the moment, thoughts naturally come up. Nothing wrong with that. Seeing the thoughts bubbling up is part of being in the moment.

What will pull you away from the moment is grabbing onto the thoughts with your attention as they bubble up, becoming involved with their contents.

It’s like driving a car in heavy traffic: you need to be very aware of the situation moment by moment, ready to respond to anything that happens. Because you’re very aware, you’re likely to notice many things around you. For instance, you might notice that the woman in the car next to yours is wearing something strange on her head. Noticing this is a natural part of being aware, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not in the moment. But if you let your attention get tangled up in this odd sight, so that you keep staring at her, trying to figure out what that thing on her head is and why it’s there—basically trying to construct a story about it—then you’re in trouble. You’re attention is no longer in the moment. You’re missing the guy putting on his brakes right in front of you.

The crucial skill is not stopping thoughts; it’s letting go of them before they can pull you away.

Because you seek after methods, you are deceiving yourself which would cause you to miss the present, from moment to moment.

This cause you to think as you have stated in not many words, that to stay in the present “Now” requires much effort and cause you to believe that it is possible to miss.

It is not what you think perse , but how you think what you think.

Allow the things that you regard on an everyday basis to abide in the integrity of what it is.
So let the fool be a fool and the wise be wise, let the thief be a thief and honest man be honest, let the dog be a dog and the cat be cat.

If you seek to maintain the integrity of things within your own mind, then your mind will maintain its own integrity…

That way you will always preserve the Now for what it is.
And that will be manifested as peace within your own soul.
