Do you believe in ghosts?

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) October 31st, 2013

OK, I know that this question has been asked before. But the last time was 3 years ago, and there has been considerable turnover in Fluther membership since then. So, I ask it again, appropriately enough, on Halloween.

Do you believe in ghosts? Why or why not?

Yes.

I have seen three in my life. The experiences could not be explained otherwise. One time was not scary, but the other two were hair-raising.

Seek's avatar

No.

There is, so far, no empirical evidence for their existence.

The isn’t even a good hypothesis. When your body dies, you’re dead. There’s nothing to leave behind, so far as we’ve been able to tell.

If I thought I saw a ghost, I would probably dismiss the experience as sensory confusion due to the way our brains process stimulae.

I take an agnostic approach to believing in ghosts. Having no personal proof, the answer is “Not really”.

Two friends, however, do. One is a high school friend whose mother has been “haunted” all of her life. Their whole family and a few friends have seen this spirit. Another friend since kindergarten, is married to a man who can tell if a building is haunted. Both the mom and the husband seem quite sane and don’t like to talk about it. It would be interesting to know what it is they are experiencing.

Pretty much. My kids have seen things in old houses in which we lived that could not be explained. I was talking with my sister on scype who was living in a house and saw a person pass behind her. There was no one home but her. None of this has been scary for any of us.

ucme's avatar

No, they’re lying bastards & I can see right through them.

LornaLove's avatar

I do although I find it hard to believe. I’ll explain, I have experienced ghosts and had ghostly experiences. I am aware that some might see a ghost as part of a delusion if they are ill for example. I have had experiences that have been verified.

ragingloli's avatar

I would have to be pretty wasted to believe in ghosts.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Yes, though I dislike the word “ghost.”

I know there’s no proof of their existence, but I’ve had experiences that could not be explained any other way.

Pachy's avatar

Sheet no!

ucme's avatar

Actual, bonafide, genuine, no bullshit answer…
I think I do believe in them, spirits of people who died suddenly & either don’t know they’re dead, or refuse to accept they are.
Certainly more believable than alien abduction shit, or most pathetic conspiracy theory crap.

Smitha's avatar

I neither believe nor disbelieve. Unfortunately I have never had an encounter with ghosts. You really have to experience ghosts and something paranormal to know that it exists.

rojo's avatar

I think so.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Yes, although I don’t think I have ever actually witnessed one.

Skylight's avatar

Yes, I adhere to the concept of the supernatural and I’ll tell you why: 1. I have had formidable personal experiences with it, & 2. I know that humans only detect 1% of the Electromagnetic field around them, and 1% of the Acoustical scale around them. This means that the five measly senses we’re left with can only see the walls we walk into. How often do we think about the fact physical objects are always undulating and that the universe blinks on and off? Yah, our eyes are really swell. We can see almost past our noses with them.

However, we do have a sixth sense APP included in our mental biocomputers, When this puppy is developed, you know, like a muscle, we begin to develop our ability to see what is REALLY around us and hear what is REALLY around us. I mean come on, 1%? I know that percentage is correct because scientists said so, and you can see scientists with your own two eyes. :)

Our intuition comes from this sense. Most have intuition, right? Its just undeveloped psychic ability.

Spirit energies are merely vibrating at a different frequency. Its like dog whistles vibrating too high for our hears to hear, or an AM radio not picking up FM frequencies. Our 5 sense are extremely limited, yet we draw from our 6th sense to detect energies they can’t.

Ghosts, spirits, and a wide variety of other energetic critters are absolutely everywhere, including waifs, nature spirits, fairies, (yup) and other things I’d rather not mention. But you’ll be pretty darn sure they’re not there if you’re still stuck in the 1% grid. Otherwise, even if you can’t see them you can feel them.

@Skylight May I ask what physical or mental differences you have?

We had a Q before that I posted actually, that proved that some of us may have some precognition or other abilities, so what do you think is the difference between yourself and those of us who may be open and receptive to it?

Skylight's avatar

@KNOWITALL We all have a gland, the Pineal gland in the brain that filters out a great deal of the energy around us so we can actually live productive lives in the third dimension.

A person can alter the functioning of the Pineal gland as they awaken their consciousness via willful seeking of truth. They undergo a variety of techniques, depending upon the path they have chosen, and these techniques serve to awaken many aspects of what is called ‘higher mind’. Within higher mind is the ability to perceive of many frequencies beyond those of the third dimension.

I am not new to this but have devoted my life to it…many lifetimes. I have learned many things and I have always approached knowledge with gratitude and humility. Knowledge to me is exciting, sacred and highly desirable. I have, on my journey uncovered many mysteries, yet, the more you know, the less you realize you truly know. Its a wondrous thing. Still, I would rather be empty than cling to knowledge that limits, and I have emptied myself many times and listened.

I know about the limitations we here on the third dimension are bound by, because I also know what it is like beyond them.

We are all bound by our senses, but we have the option to willfully grow, transform and awaken. But, we do so incrementally.

When the 6th sense, merely one of many latent senses, FULLY awakens, you see. That is all I can tell you. I have no desire to convince. I have nothing to prove. Nor was it my desire to express an assumption I was somehow above others. That simply is not true.

Everyone in this world is cherished and exceedingly significant. All I was doing was sharing what I know. Many will not agree. I am wholly accustomed to that. But those are not the ones I am speaking to.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Skylight Oh, I agree that everyone has something to love about them, and I never thought you were saying you were better than anyone, promise.

Maybe sometime you can share more about altering the pineal gland for the rest of us?! Thanks and welcome!

Skylight's avatar

@KNOWITALL Thank you. I appreciate the welcome. You know, I don’t really like to talk much about these things on websites like this. It seems self indulgent. Everyone has a story and much to offer in their own right.

I look forward to learning about all of the amazing people here. If someone asks, I’ll share what I can without being too wordy, which is really difficult for me. lol

Thanks again.

If by ghosts you mean any kind of contact with the dead then definitely, no question about it. If you mean you have to see an apparition then no.

Valerie111's avatar

No, I believe they are demons.

Blondesjon's avatar

No.

The idea of ghosts is just another way the mind tries to find a workaround for death being the end.

Some_Ghost's avatar

Hi guys! :D

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Some_Ghost NICE!!! Welcome to fluther, I’m sure we all have some questions….lol

Some_Ghost's avatar

Well, I seem to be stuck as a ghost, because I can’t figure out what to do to advance to the next stage. In fact, I’m older than all of you guys. I myself have many questions… however, I particularly enjoy this day. People don’t freak out so much when they see me floating about in the streets. :)

I didn’t use to believe in ghosts, until …

Until a business trip to Singapore some years ago, and now I’m not so sure …

My company sent me to Singapore on business back in the ‘90s. Those trips consisted of meetings all day, and then my boss back in the States always wanted me summarize the day’s proceedings before leaving the office. We didn’t have laptops or internet back then, so this had to be done by email on a dumb terminal.
Anyway, I was working late one night (it was around 9 or 10 pm), and everyone else had gone home except for a Singaporean colleague, Mr. Toh, who was working alone in his office. I was sitting at a desk with a terminal in the open area, in a desk chair that had a high back, working away on my email when I felt a sharp jolt on the back of the chair. At first I thought it was Toh coming to say something to me, so I turned around but I saw nothing. I thought this was a bit strange, but I kept on working.
Finally, it was time to start wrapping things up. I had left my briefcase on the floor because the desk that I was working at was awfully cluttered, and I didn’t want to disturb someone else’s stuff. So I got down on one knee to put my things away in my briefcase. When I got up, I saw that one of my pants legs was dirty around the knee area, only it was not the knee that had been on the floor, it was the other one! (The cleaning crew hadn’t come in yet.) When I go down on one knee, I always go down on my left knee, but it was my right knee that was dirty! I was wondering to myself, “how could this be?” when I started to smell something burning. I thought that someone had left the coffee pot on, so I went to check it, but no, the pot was cold and had no coffee in it.
Now I’m thinking, “OK, things are pretty weird here”, so I went to see if Toh was finished with his work and ready to leave. I told him what I had noticed, and he said, “Oh, yeah, strange things sometimes happen around here. The cleaning crew say they’ve seen a woman dressed in white wander around the halls on Monday nights. Only on Mondays.” I said, “OK, this is too weird for me. Let’s go get dinner.” (In Singapore, lots of places stay open for dinner until midnight.)

What @Seek_Kolinahr said. Exactly. Although she’s much more polite than I am.

ETpro's avatar

No. All that sensing machinery that Ghost Hunters carry with them to this and that place that’s supposedly haunted has been applied to sense the departing soul as humans breathe their last. It senses nothing. There is no there there. No soul, no ghosts.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

NOPE! Once the body dies the spirit cannot decide to just hang around for any reason.

ragingloli's avatar

ghosts are actually cloaked aliens shifting partially out of subspace.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Skylight I really hope that what you said here is true because this stuff absolutely fascinates me.

2davidc8's avatar

@Some_Ghost Very cute avatar!!!

ibstubro's avatar

No, I don’t believe in ghosts.

I was open to the idea my whole life, and never saw one. Or a UFO.

Damn, I WANTED to.

Seek's avatar

^ I used to feel the same way about angels. I knew people with awesome stories about seeing angels, and I never saw them. Sometimes they claimed to see them while I was in the room, and nothing.

Jerks.

ibstubro's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr You believe in angels, or not?

Seek's avatar

Used to. Not anymore.

ibstubro's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr

I’ve seen little evidence of the mystical.
