Why did the article call the Mexican kids "Indians"?

It’s a neat story but I can’t figure out why they called them Indians when they’re Mexican.

The team was made up of Trique Indians, a tribe that lives in Mexico, but are not, per se, ethnically Mexican.

If they are not ethnically Mexican, what are they?

@Windmill They are ethnic Indian or you could refer to them as Native Mexicans a la Native American.
