Brit Jellies: Will you be going to an organised firework display tonight, or hold your own in the garden?

Asked by ucme (50047points) November 5th, 2013

We’re doing both, my daughter & I are off out to see the local display, followed later by a small family gathering in the garden.

If you answer this later, after your firework experience, then just tell us how you got on.

I miss Bonfire Night!

Headhurts's avatar

None. Staying in, snuggling up on the sofa.

Tell the rest of us about this holiday!

Are you celebrating having gotten rid of those damned, nuisance, pain-in-the-butt colonies?

Judi's avatar

My grandson just called me and told me all about it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What are they celebrating?

OpryLeigh's avatar

Neither, I’m staying in to keep an eye on my dog who gets very stressed when she hears the fireworks. Even a kong packed with cheese isn’t helping so I’m a bit of a firework humbug!!!

I am giving the Council’s fireworks display a rain check this year. (Literally).

WHY ARE WE HAVING FIREWORKS???

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III Google “Guy Fawkes Day” and you will find out.

Headhurts's avatar

The neighbours are having a huge bonfire, and all the fireworks they could possible find, by the looks of it. I hope all the animals around here are safe indoors.

Dutchess_III's avatar

O. I know about that.

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III So why are you asking the question?

ucme's avatar

@Leanne1986 Yeah, our dog isn’t too bad, but she gets spooked by the really loud, close up bangs. There’s always one of us “on shift” comforting her throughout the night.
She’s fine so long as she gets to sit on the sofa with someone, only night she’s allowed anywhere near the furniture.

No, I know what Guy Fawkes Night is (roughly) so I don’t need to look it up. I didn’t know that’s what we’re celebrating. Well, they are, anyway.

Guy Fawkes night

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

My British bloke’s home town doesn’t do a formal Guy Fawkes Night anymore. The pub across the street held a celebration with a bonfire and fireworks over the weekend. According to him, it was a glorious display, despite the rain. He caught part of it from our bedroom window.

We have Guy Fawkes night down under also, these days I just lie in bed and listen, the explosions have gotten louder and louder, more like a bomb.

downtide's avatar

I did neither. Most of the organised things round here happened last weekend, and doing the fireworks at home is just an expensive waste of money.

ucme's avatar

@Adagio Really? I never knew that, showing my ignorance I know.

Adagio's avatar

@ucme I kid you not.

ucme's avatar

@Adagio Maybe it’s a commonwealth thing, but I don’t think the Canadians or Caribbean countries have it…or do they?

Adagio's avatar

@ucme can’t help you there, I don’t know, never thought about it before.

ucme's avatar

@Adagio No, me neither, it was a question I was aiming at myself, like thinking aloud.

Guy Fawkes day is not celebrated here in Canada. Although his idea has merit given the crappy government now ensconced here. Still, the Parliament buildings are grand. It’s the government members that are not.
