Can I air-out a men's suit in the dryer?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37339points) November 6th, 2013

I have a suit I want to wear tomorrow night. It’s been in the closet for many months, and as is typical here in the tropics, it has a musty odor.

It is a fine suit and not a cheap one. It’s 100% Irish linen.

Can I put it in the dryer on a no-heat setting for about 20 minutes to air it out?

It’s hanging in the open room now, but I am not sure that 2 days of that will suffice to remove the odor.

I will, of course, be wearing a very loud aloha shirt with it.

I think I would hang it in the bathroom with the window open and let the steam from the shower de-crease it. But you could try the dryer at a very gentle setting first.

I wouldn’t risk it. Off the top of my head, what about buying some sprigs of rosemary or some other fresh, aromatic herb, and pinning them inside the suit until you need it?

@glacial Rosemary is a good idea.

@janbb Thank you.

If you try it, let us know how it turns out!

What about Febreeze? Or would that ruin it?

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@Katniss I don’t care for the idea of spraying anything other than water on it.

For linen, I would spray it with diluted white vinegar (maybe 1:8), and iron it.

I hear you on the mustiness. Makes you wonder why we bother washing the clothes after we’ve worn them, instead of waiting until right before. Oi.

@Seek_Kolinahr That’s not a bad idea at all. I’m talking about the white vinegar solution and not the washing just before wearing routine.

Of course. ^_^

It’s what I do for my nice things.

Hanging small package of small aromatic cedar blocks in the closet also helps. It works well! As mentioned above spraying diluted viegar is also a good option.

The dryer thing will work fine. No heat. Fluff it up. Then hang it up. Hope this reaches you in time.

I’d seek out a professional that can do a gentle dry clean on the premises and then HAND press it for you.

Home or flat pressing can cause that dreadful boxy look.

If they are willing to help on such short notice provide a tip.

If that isn’t possible I’d hang it where it can be made as dry as possible to minimize the smell. In front of the aircon is ideal.

Better to risk being a little musty than take ANY chance of wrecking a suit.

How is the weather there right now? Can you hang it outside in the sun? let the natural breeze get into it?

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

It will rain today.

Oh, that won’t help at all then :(
