Is it possible to have more than one active Fluther account at a time?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) November 7th, 2013

It’s not a goal of mine, just a question.

I know on these sites there are always suspicions or accusations of members having more than one active account (always for nefarious purposes, of course). For future discourse, I wonder how likely that IS.

If it IS possible for a member to have more than one active account, is there a way to detect it, other than ‘feelings’ and ‘impressions’?

Check with @Augustian, she is the Site Manager. There have been cases where it has been done BUT to answer your question “Yes but with reservations ! ! ”

Someone was banned for gaming the system by having multiple accounts and giving itself lurve but other people do have secondary account from which they ask NSFW and other embarrassing questions..

ibstubro's avatar

I’m hoping Augustian will just find us and weigh in, @Tropical_Willie. I’d like to public-forum it so there’s a record to refer (Askvillers) to. But, thanks.

ibstubro's avatar

@janbb so you’re confident in your own mind that a member can maintain more than one account?

janbb's avatar

@ibstubro Yes – I know it has happened and been discussed as o.k. Just don’t give each other lurve.

ibstubro's avatar

Thanks, @janbb. I wonder if there’s any monitoring of cross accounts. Like harrassment by using more than one account to answer the same question in a negative way?

We do allow people to have more than one account, so long as it isn’t used for deceptive purposes and/or to game the lurve system. I have one, myself, because my teenage children are members here…they don’t need to know everything their mother thinks or has done, haha.

Basically, you’re allowed to use a second account to ask or answer questions you don’t want associated with your main username. But you’re not allowed to interact with yourself (say, to make your point of view look more popular than it is, or defend your main account), lurve yourself, or pretend to be some wildly different persona just for kicks.

Here’s @augustlan

In answer to your most recent question, @ibstubro, mods can see which accounts are associated with one another.

Thanks for sending me the question, @Tropical_Willie!

ibstubro's avatar

Thanks, @augustlan for setting the record straight, and thanks @Tropical_Willie for inviting Augustian.

There are a couple of former Askville members that I’m discussing Fluther with, and they’re concerned they might be subjected to some of the abuse allowed at Askville.

augustlan's avatar

We strongly frown on abuse/harassment here. If it happens and gets reported, we investigate and act. Up to and including banning the harasser’s account, if necessary. Anyone interested in joining should be encouraged to take a look at our guidelines and jump on in!

ibstubro's avatar

I’m trying, @augustlan. I’m trying.

:)

I have several email addresses. So I could see how it would be possible to have multiple Fluther accounts. Just use a different email address for each account. This could be handy if you have a multiple personality disorder.

Blondesjon's avatar

I’m @jonsblond.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Yes, but I think the mods can see the associated IP address. Multiple accounts and one IP would be suspect ( @Blondesjon and soul mate @Jonsblond ).

;>)

Judi's avatar

I have a super secret one that I use only to ask embarrassing questions.

ibstubro's avatar

@Juels I think so far they’re limiting it to the bi-polar. 2 accounts?

ibstubro's avatar

@Judi Some seem to thrive on asking the most ‘embarrassing questions.’ We never know if you really are asking for a friend, if you’re being a nut, or if you really do have herpes
(Oh, SNAP! Sorry!!)

joking

Juels's avatar

@Tropical_Willie I also login from multiple computers. That would change the ip address. I have my phone, my home laptop, and my work pc (shhh). I suppose I could also use my hubby or daughter’s phones or my daughter’s laptop. Alas, I only have 1 Fluther account. So all of this planning is for naught.

Juels's avatar

What is the saying? Eavesdroppers seldom hear anything good of themselves.

ibstubro's avatar

@Juels, Juels, Juels. Did you not learn at Askville that there is a certain element that doesn’t need instruction or encouragement to break the rules?

:)

Juels's avatar

@ibstubro My bad. Sorry. Guess that is the programmer in me… Gotta make it idiot-proof, look for the work around.

ibstubro's avatar

@Juels sometimes you just have to allow the unimaginative to remain uninformed.

:-D

ibstubro's avatar

Oh, and how pathetic is it to be logging in to give yourself imaginary Lurve??

Juels's avatar

@ibstubro Is self-love wrong? Ahem.. self-lurve

ibstubro's avatar

This is Fluther. Speak out—are you talking about masterbasting? There are less pleasurable ways to keep your jelly hydrated!

Juels's avatar

LOL Thanks for the laugh. We’d need a whole “nother” thread for that one!

Blondesjon's avatar

@ibstubro . . . you’re not allowed to masturbate unless you can spell it correctly

edit: missed the basting part my bad but there is still no masturbation without u

Juels's avatar

@Blondesjon You may have just come up with a plan to fight illiteracy.

ucme's avatar

What uc is what you get…me!

chyna's avatar

@Judi You are Randy!?

Seek's avatar

I’ve often daydreamed about Fluthering as my former self, all grown up. Playing the other side of the religion debate, as I used to, with my current knowledge and experience. See if I can hold my own with this crowd.

But the idea has been nixed from Up On High, which is cool.

I guess…

Judi's avatar

@chyna, nope. What did Randy ask?

chyna's avatar

Remember: “I only want nice people to answer”

Judi's avatar

Oh yes. :-)

ibstubro's avatar

Life would be really boring without the naughty people.

:D

ucme's avatar

@ibstubro You failed to give me lurve, now that is boring.

ucme's avatar

^Spit or swallow?

ibstubro's avatar

@ucme sorry, it didn’t immediately sink in. Too many threads, and this one was going all kinda hurky-jerky just then.

I didn’t even thank @Blondesjon for saying he couldn’t masturbate without me.

Apologies, all around.

ucme's avatar

@ibstubro No need to apologise, I couldn’t care less about “lurve”, prefer it if no scoring system was in place. It’s just whenever I see anyone’s answer being the lone wolf like that it seems incredibly petty & unnecessary, some of the time anyway.

ibstubro's avatar

@ucme I agree about leaving people out. At the time I read (mis-read?) your comment I didn’t think it was on-topic somehow, and scanned on down. That happens sometime if you turn a word or phrase or are too witty for your own good…as I well know. :)

ucme's avatar

@ibstubro “Too witty for your own good.”
Haha, sounds like my old school headmaster :)

Juels's avatar

@ucme @ibstubro You should get ‘Somejelly on Fluther lurves me” t-shirts.

Seek's avatar

Haha. I’m in Lurve with @ibstubro too. He’s a lurveable fella.

ucme's avatar

@Juels You just reminded me of the Fluther tee-shirts…shudders

ibstubro's avatar

(Oh, crap. Now I’m going to have to show my ass to prove that I can fit in.)

>:-)

Seek's avatar

Hey, I LIKE my Fluther shirt.

It was worth moderating for you jerks for four months.

ucme's avatar

That is, of course, your prerogative. Me, I wouldn’t be caught dead in one.

CWOTUS's avatar

I have three active accounts, which I’ve never tried to hide. In fact, each of the accounts acknowledges the other. But I’ve also never attempted to game the lurve system with those accounts, either.

Juels's avatar

@CWOTUS Just curious. Why three?

CWOTUS's avatar

Because I haven’t seen the need for a fourth yet.

ibstubro's avatar

@CWOTUS For what different purposes do you use the 3 accounts?

Nimis's avatar

@augustlan Are you allowed to poke fun at your other account for their dumbass answer?

augustlan's avatar

No, but you can poke fun at my dumbass answers. :p
