Is there a new product or invention that you tried and loved, only to see it taken off the market?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) November 7th, 2013

The curse of the innovator, I love to try new things. The worst thing is when you love a new product, tell all your friends, and then the stop marketing the product. Here are 3 of mine:

Hefty HandVac: hand held vacuum sealer with (Ziplock style) bags available everywhere at about the same cost as regular bags.

Glad SimplyCooking bags: Ziplock type bags to microwave food in, and reuse. (I have one bag I bet I cooked 20–30 potatoes in.)

Right Guard Silver Deodorant.

NUMEROUS bandages, including hydrocolloid and silver.

What product did YOU love that they pulled off the market too soon?

Nes original Nintendo entertainment system and Command and Conquer Red Alert Two. Also the 30 year home mortgages. Also the Alberta and Vancouver Stock Exchanges. Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. I loved destination earthstar from NES, and Star Command for Atari.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What happened to the 30 year home mortgage? That’s what I have….?

ibstubro's avatar

The earlier entertainment systems are highly collected today…games, too, naturally. They weren’t taken taken off the market too soon…they were upgraded.

talljasperman's avatar

@Dutchess_III In Canada you can only get 20 or 25 year mortgages and you must put 20% down payment… this is only required on new purchases and is not retroactive.

ibstubro's avatar

A NEW product, or invention? Perhaps something you purchase that was on the market a year or less?

Ha!

One of our close friends worked with Glad for their SimplyCooking Bags. I remember her being so excited about it too! I’ll have to tell her the product made such an impression.

As for the question…I miss pear-flavored Yoplait. Yum. There’s probably a lot more, but I’m blanking right now.

ibstubro's avatar

@fluthernutter I was little slow to warm to them, but they’re great for cooking vegetables in the microwave. The directions/times are even printed on each bag! The ‘tater bag’ I just turn up to dry, then re-use. I honestly think they don’t give a lot of these products enough time to catch on.

fluthernutter's avatar

@ibstubro I’ve actually never seen one of them. I think they were BPA-free, but were they clearly labelled that way? I think that’s probably what contributed to their flop, the growing concern with BPA in plastics.

Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific, Smitty, and I want Avon’s tortoise seamless combs back, at least one. My hair is really really fine, and those little sharp places in combs slice up my hair. I missed hip huggers when they went out, but I sure couldn’t wear them now. If I did, they wouldn’t go back out of style, they’d be outlawed.
There are actually others. I know because I remember the frustration of looking for things and being told they were discontinued, but I don’t recall right now what.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Pineapple cream cheese. It isn’t there anymore. :(

ibstubro's avatar

I remember “Gee”, @Jonesn4burgers. And hiphuggers ARE back. I’m wearing a pair as we speak. They just renamed them “low rise, slim fit”. If I know the combs exactly, I might be able to find them…we have, literally, ½ a hay wagon of Avon bottles the next sale.

ibstubro's avatar

That bites, @Dutchess_III. I used to really like the Garden Vegetable, so I know how you feel. Have you tried to find a recipe on-line to make your own? With discontinued foods, I’ve found that people rush to offer subs.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Meh. Nah. I can live without. But we used to use it in our homemade waffles. SOOOO good! Like a secret taste that was perfect but couldn’t be pinned down.

fluthernutter's avatar

@Jonesn4burgers
Found ya some seamless combs!
(Not Avon though.)

ibstubro's avatar

@fluthernutter I don’t see where it say anything about BPA, but the copyright is 2006.

ibstubro's avatar

VERY COOL on the combs, @fluthernutter!

fluthernutter's avatar

@ibstubro That sounds about right. Copyright in 2006. Product on shelves in 2007. BPA craze in 2008. Probably pulled in under a year.

Glad I could help!

I found this wonderful concealer: Eye Slept, by Tricia Sawyer. The concealer was a light-green color that blended perfectly, wasn’t visible, and magically negated anything red or brownish-red. This stuff brightened my eyes; it was a good night’s sleep in a jar. The company discontinued it a couple of years ago. If I’d know, I would have stocked up before it disappeared.

DuBarry Cleansing Grains: the original exfoliate. This product is from another generation; when I was growing up, my now-elderly mother always had a container in the bathroom cabinet. It was all-natural, made from finely-milled oats and other grains. It smelled wonderful, felt even better, and worked so well. I escaped adolescence without any complexion problems, and I really believe that this product helped.

Tuno which was a tasty soy based product that had the texture of canned tuna. It was delicious and you could also use it as a filling for burritos and enchiladas.

Hain Superfruits this was a vegan Jello alternative made with agar agar (sea weed) but it tasted and had the consistency of Jello.

ibstubro's avatar

Whoa @Kardamom. I’m glad I never tried that…sounds like I’d be seriously bummed. (A guilty pleasure is Morningstar Farms mini-corndogs. Swimming in ketchup!)

I have disliked insubstantial foods all my life. Jello, marshmallows, whipped cream, etc. Being a veggie is another good reason to avoid the 1st two! :-D

Kardamom's avatar

@ibstubro I love those mini corn dogs too, only I like them with mustard. I also like Morningstar Farms Breaded Chicken Patties. Slap one of those onto a hamburger bun, add mayonaise, lettuce and tomato and you’re good to go. They also taste good with barbecue sauce.

ibstubro's avatar

@Kardamom I like the grilled chix better. And I’ve put the sausage patties off on any number of people that could not tell they’re meat free. I don’t eat the substitutes a lot…once in a while and on the run. Last week I used the hamburger to make Hamburger Helper Potato Stroganoff…My mom was quite the gourmet and I wanted recreate my favorite dish.

It’s not technically off the market, but last year somebody frakked around with the Count Chocula cereal recipe.

And I am PISSED.

ibstubro's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I used to have a friend that at nothing but Count Chocula for breakfast. He scoffed at thoss other cocoa cereals. No doubt reduced the sugar.

Seek's avatar

Jerks.

ibstubro's avatar

^^^ Well, before long the ‘average sized box’ will be slightly larger than the ones we could lay down, split the front on, then pour in milk and eat when I was a kid.

fluthernutter's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr In a way, I think that’s worse. The other way, at least you have fond memories.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Cap’n Crunch. And now, off to bed with me!

augustlan's avatar

Mr. Goodbar Bites. When they came out, I was ecstatic. Individual crunchy, salted peanuts, coated in milk chocolate, they quickly became my new favorite candy. Then they just disappeared. I still mourn the loss.

ucme's avatar

Tartan paint.

ibstubro's avatar

A new one on me, @augustlan. Sounds delicious. Have you tried sprinkling a tiny bit of flour salt on the outside of regular chocolate covered peanuts?

Katniss's avatar

Coke Black! That shit was the bomb. Apparently I’m the only one who thought so.

ibstubro's avatar

Lol. Apparently so, @Katniss. You’re the ONLY one I’ve ever heard of that tasted it.

Kind of puts you off trying new products after a while. In the pop line, I loved Apple Slice. I only ever saw Slice cherry lime fountain, and it was great, too.

Katniss's avatar

@ibstubro I’m a risk taker, what can I say? lol It was a combination of my 2 favorite beverages!! Talk about killing two birds with one stone.
I haven’t seen Slice in years! It’s still around?

ibstubro's avatar

^^^ NO. Slice turned into the ‘Mountain Dew’ derivative, ‘Sierra Mist’. HOW CREATIVE. Plus the pop is not nearly as good…a lot blander.

Katniss's avatar

Ohhhhhhh ok. I’m not a Sierra Mist fan. I don’t care much for Sprite either. lol I prefer my pop with caffeine.

ibstubro's avatar

You’re still young, hon. It’s as much Diet Dr. Pepper as I can hold until noon, then I lay off caffeine. Fresca is actually my afternoon choice. I liked the Slice’s because they were atypical. Not same old ho-hum.

Katniss's avatar

lol 42 isn’t that young, but thank you for thinking so! I actually drink coffee right up until bedtime. It doesn’t keep me awake, amazingly enough.

ibstubro's avatar

I think it’s what you get used to. I’m 52 and my heart rate has always been high. As in resting heart rate in college was 90–110. I can NOT drink coffee any more, and the Dr.P till noon is strictly precaution. One side of my family is coffee till bed, and the other side is caffeine free…all with the same genes.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Um…candy cigarettes?
The old Cracker Jacks in a box where you actually got a real prize instead of a piece of cardboard.
