Blower vs Plow?

Asked by Judi (40025points) November 11th, 2013 from iPhone

We have a ¾ mile dirt road up to the top of our mountain paradise.
We can get a plow attachment for our tractor for about $2500 or a blower attachment for about $5000.
Pros and cons?

I’d go with plow. I would think you could do things with a plow that you can’t do with a blower, like move cow carcasses off the road. And stuff.

On dirt or gravel the blower can kick up some rocks that will have near lethal velocities. Only an issue if you have neighbors close to the road. Blowers also take more maintenance as they have more moving parts. Blowers will work in heavy snow that will get plows stuck.

Plows can get stuck when the snow gets too deep or heavy to move. Plows don’t move the snow as far off the path as a blower can. Plows are cheaper to buy and easier maintain.

If it was me, I would get the blower if you have a cab on the tractor. No cab on the tractor, I would get the plow.

Dirt or stone equals plow, you can use it to fill in the ruts in the spring. And for ¾ of a mile an old four wheel drive truck might be better than a tractor. Pushing or plowing snow of any depth with a tractor will beat the tractor to death.

I want a picture of your mountain paradise!

A blower is fantastic – if you have a paved driveway. You can wait until the storm has subsided and then go out and clean it up at your leisure.
Since you have a dirt driveway I’d go with the plow. During a big storm someone might have to get out of bed once or twice to keep the road open.

Another vote for plow. Rock-blowers aren’t fun, or nearly as versatile.

@LuckyGuy How many people out in the woods have a paved driveway? Last place I lived, we didn’t even have pavement for the mile leading up to our driveway!

It should be illegal for people in the country to have such long, alluring driveways. They curve around, over hill and dale and disappear into woods and you just want to follow it for an adventure but you CAN’T because it’s someone’s drive way!

@jerv I have 250 ft of compacted, crush and run, stone to the barn and about 150 ft of paved (asphalt) to the house. I found the blower on the tractor was a PIA. It needed to be lifted just off the pavement to do a good job. But…. that made the tractor front heavy and took weight off the rear wheels. I then had to weigh the back end down to counteract the front. I hated it.
Now I plow the barn road and use a Troy Bilt 12 hp walk behind to do the driveway. It is great!

I want an invite too. If nothing else, just to see the fancy toilet in person.

Chyna, we are building on to this house and adding another Toto toilet to the guest room.

I should mention we already have a bucket it just doesn’t articulate to plow.

I was hoping someone forgot to add the NSFW tag to this question.

Get a blower, if you have an area you want to blow the snow towards.

WHAT is a Toto toilet??

Dutchess_III's avatar

Judi…I’m just dyin’ here!! Seriously…heated seats AND heated water? And remote control lids? Oh my! We’ve come a long way baby!

With front washing, rear washing and a blow dryer.

The guy that we hired last year to plow the road says blower. He said that our road is do narrow that it is easy to get a big burn built up on both sides and the water has no place to go when it melts except right down the road, washing away any base we might have.
I think we will just wait another year. Hubby can move snow with the bucket on his tractor if we need to and we can always hire it out.
