The holidays are upon us, how many homeless, and or poor needy people are you going to feed that you DON’T know?

question speaks for itself; this holiday season how many people outside of friends and family—STRANGERS, are you going to feed, at least one meal that is at least a main, a side and desert?

None that I know of really. We have to go to a food pantry ourselves. Although I am lucky enough to have family that will serve a great meal on Christmas. Any food from the pantry we can’t use we donate. And I always give a little to the bell ringers.
But as for personally feeding someone an entire meal…well…none.

I’m not sure. I always donate money to the Salvation Army and to our local food bank. Sometimes I’ll buy a homeless person a meal at Jack in the Box, and sometimes I’ll go in the 99 Cent store and spend $10 on a bag of food. You can get a bag of 10 apples, a bunch of bananas, a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, a jar of nuts, a gallon bottle of water, some pop top cans of beans and some vacuumed packed tuna with crackers for that amount.

Personally feeding “a main, a side and a dessert” – none.

None. It’s hard enough feeding three people. My family comes first.

Actually, my Thanksgiving meal is likely going to be provided by charity. And I will be sharing it with people even less fortunate than myself. We don’t have a lot of family local, so every year I have over a few people who can’t do for themselves or don’t have family to eat with.

Whenever there is a celebration in our family we usually donate food to the inmates of a Poor home near my house. Such small treats at times are really appreciated and gratefully received by the people and kids living there.

There’s this one really nice homeless man who comes into the store every few weeks. I’d like to get him a tarp or a few blankets, because it doesn’t seem like he has any.

Probably none, because I can’t right now. I have in the past eaten is soup kitchens, served by surly people doing community service, and gotten food boxes, that were a blessing at the time. I have done tons of community service. I’m taking some time off.

How can we know if it hasn’t happened yet? My mom does an open house like @Seek_Kolinahr, but I just give them money.

I donate food to my local homeless shelter every Christmas. No starters or desserts but enough turkey, veg and potatoes to feed 6 to 8 people.

So, my husband’s truck broke down last week, and my car broke down last night. We have exactly $0 to our name, and he’s supposed to start a new job tomorrow – except I have no idea how he’s going to get there now. We have no way to get to the charity event that was going to provide our Thanksgiving dinner today.

Fuck Thanksgiving.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Sorry about that. I would pray your situation improves, however you might be offended over that….so….sorry is all I can say.

@Seek_Kolinahr A lot of churches will pick you up or deliver to you if needed, make a few calls and someone will come through, I’m sure. Tough run of luck lately babe, I’m sorry.

We’ve gotten the car working again. Rest of it’s still up in the air.

@Seek_Kolinahr Just keep watching Doc Martin, to carry you through Thanksgiving, then you guys can celebrate properly and minimally next week. That’s what we are going to do. I have to house sit on Thursday, so we’re just doing a very minimal thing. We got some frozen Thanksgiving-like stuff at Trader Joe’s last week, so we’ll just go with whatever sounds good on any given day (Brussels sprouts with cheese, sweet potato souffle) I’m also going to make a pumpkin pie. I bought frozen pie crust about 4 months ago, and canned pumpkin last week, so there you go. We just had a flood in our house for the 4th time in 6 years, so our holidays are going to be scaled way, way back. Thank goodness for relatives and friends who have extended invitations. Otherwise Taco Bell and ice skating is a good alternative. At least for me. My neighbor, poor dear, broke her wrist 2 day ago, and she asked me if I could walk her dog, until she got her cast off. I jumped at the chance!
