How does one pay their bills when in prison?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) November 21st, 2013

Do their friends or family do it for them, do they just go into debt? I realize bills may be the least of their worries but I’ve always wondered this.

If your friends or family don’t take care of this, you end up losing it.
It is common for people to leave jail, having lost everything. Even stuff your friends took to help you ended up being sold by your friends.

What bills? Rent and a possible car payment are the only ones I can think of that you’d need to pay while incarcerated. If you’re in prison (not jail), you’ll be there for at least a year. No need for a phone, electricity, water, car insurance, cable, etc. Cancel all that shit.

If I was in prison, I’d just want my car loan paid. I don’t think it would be unfair to assume that most prisoners don’t have car loans. And a mortgage? Not likely.

There could be charge cards, doctor bills, etc. Hopefully family will help out.

They can seek the help of a trusted friend or family member or can even sign power of attorney to a friend or lawyer. For minor cases they can also write to their creditors and explain that they can’t pay bills from prison and will contact them once they are out.

My mom did ten years in prison for a probation violation. She was out for time served for the original crime, a whopping 8 months for murder. But ten years for being neighbors with a notorious narc that rolled over on everyone when he was busted.

She was busted for the probation thing when I was 15 and released when I was 25. Luckily she didn’t really have any bills to pay since… ten years and all that was pretty much irrelevant.

Here is the best part. She is just now getting off probation in March. They charged her for probation for the last eight years. About 1200 per year. So we are frantically trying to come up with money to pay the fine since not paying it could land her back in jail for another ten years. If that happens she will die in there.

Don’t even get me started on prisons being owned by for profit corporations.

I work with a girl who’s dad is in and out of jail. She uses his debit card to take care of his bills.

@johnpowell That kind of pisses me off. I’ve heard this from others as well. How do they expect people to pay all that money when they haven’t been able to work?
I’m sorry. I hope you’re able to come up with it so she doesn’t have to go back.

I always assumed the family takes care of them, hmmm, good to know.

@Katniss She isn’t going back. I will hide her in a apartment somewhere and have food delivered first. I hope she likes soup.
